We need ideas on how to set up the back of the prado for weekend camping. We are looking at getting another car soon so we do not want to deck out the back with permanent drawers etc we jut need a quick system to throw in the back for a weekender and a quick unpack on sunday afternoon. we have 2 toddlers.

Got a cargo barrier? Simplest and cheapest is to get large stackable gear tubs from a camping or hardware store for all of the loose items, and pack things like tent, sleeping bags around them. No need to go for the whole drawer/fridge setup unless your vehicle is on permanent touring duty.

Only hassle is that sometimes eski access is a pain - a couple of weekends and you'll have figured out the best way to pack/unpack while allowing for access on roadside stops.

We have done the whole box thing for years but I am just sick of the friday afternoon saga of packing up and the unload and not being able to find stuff when we get there. I just want to pitch the tent and drink NOT spend hours searching through boxes for my wine. Thanks anyway! Yes we have a cargo barrier thanks again

I am selling a removable storage system if you are interested. Takes a couple of minutes to put in and take out. See my eBay item 270096360648. This will suit the late model Prados.

I'm assuming that you're not using the seats in the rear, and that the kids are actually in the middle row of seats.

- Remove the rear fold up seats. (Instructions in your owners guide.manual).
- Unbolt the existing tie-down points in the rear cargo area.
- Cut a piece of 12mm plywood to suit the floor shape of the cargo area.
- Cover it in carpet if you want it to look good. Drill holes throught the plywood
that line up with the tie-down anchor/bolt points.
- Bolt the 'false floor' down into place using the tie-down anchor points.

You can then add fridge slides, storage tubs, tie-downs, etc or whatever you
need to easily store you weekend camping gear, to the false floor. No drilling
holes in the vehicle, and it can be easily installed and removed whenever you
need it for a weekend. Cheap and easy to do as well.

Hope it helps

That is a great idea Thanks! We do a big tour everyyear and as we have progressed from no kids, to babies to toddlers we just seemed to have never settled on a system for the once a month camping trips on a weekend! We have a cargo barrier and that seems to take room away thanks! Hubby is on it as we speak! PHEW!

Prado4X4 , i like to see that set up to have a good laugh. The plywood woud sag and it would be a real mess.
I am sure that you don't have use that method in your vehicle.
The principle is correct but you have to put two pieces of RHS accross and bolt them to the seat fittings and then put the plywood accross.
Works a treat in my Vehicle.

I am looking at buying a new Prado 1KD-FTV and want to put an AGM battery in the cargo area.
First preference is above the wheel arch but if not along the side somewhere.
Any suggestions in this regard.
Derek from ABR has given me one idea, on another thread, but just looking for as many suggestions as possible.
Thanks
Pedro

You can diy a draw type system. I think it is called cube lock or something similar and you can get it from Bunnings. There are posts here on the subject and a few really good set ups using this product. Just put the mounting on a bit of plate and you can just alter the mounting plate for your new car. Alternately, there are quite a few removable draw systems around. They are a bit expensive but will fit in many different vehicles. We had one before changing to a ute and camper and they worked well. Fidge slide, draws, water storage and table all built in. We have set our camper up in a similar way.

Seems you've tried all these other methods like the plastic tubs, etc.

Seems you're not intending to spend any money on draw setups, fridge slides, etc..

Then what do you want?

You could get a camper trailer, they have everything in nice neat places and it all comes packaged in a trailer with a big tent on top....oh that's out....

Fact is camping using tents and alike, especially with kids, comes with the associated drawbacks this being one of them. Fact is unless you are willing to spend some money, or maybe time, you can't get a quick fix....

We bought a caravan because the whole tent thing was a drag with packing, unpacking, setup, etc...Even having a caravan has some degree of preparation, but nothing like the hassle of tenting.

Hi, we have made a false floor and set of drawers for the rear of our dual-cab hilux. Being a ute (with a canopy) it does not seal very well. Our drawers run on the wood base and have been wet and covered in dust from most corners of Oz. They still slide perfectly well
We used 3 ply marine plywood but others use 5 ply.
No probs at all with warping or anything of that sort.
Can send you some pics if like.
cheers bryce
