Hi everyone,
Well we have an 8 week trip planned mainly through the north-west. I was going to be taking my own 4wd and just travelling in convoy with my parents and some mates but my friend that was coming has dropped out and I can't really afford to brunt the fuel bill myself, so reluctantly I have decided to take up my Dad's offer of travelling in their car. However now I don't know
what to take to sleep in as I was going to sleep in my own car. My parents have an oz-tent. I am needing to at least have my own space to sleep so any suggestions?? I've thought about my swag or my bushwalking tent, but keep thinking it may be a litte uncomfortable for 8 weeks..... any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks

If you find your swag comfy I would stick with that as you already have it and its easy to set up, take a tarp to keep the weather off it required. You can also then set up whever you like and give yourself a little space from the folks if required. We have travelled extensively and find our swag far more comfy than other options. Perhaps you could improve the mattress quaility to make it more comfy?

Hello Kath
Have a look at the tent/stretchers . They take less room than a swag , and pack to a more convenient shape . Slightly more room than a walking tent with a better layout for dressing and sitting . Off ground . May take a bit of work on the mattress and some people modify the hinges for comfort .

We take swag and tent. Most of the time we roll out the swag and keep it simple, but if we're staying put or in a caravan park or the weathers bad, we put up the tent.
For 8 weeks away, you'll need your own privacy and space. I'd suggest you take away the swag and a small 3-4person tent. And you can simply roll your swag out in the tent if need be.

I'd have a good talk to your parents as they now have to have the back
seat in the vehicle, and have a lot less packing space. Swags only really fit on roof racks.

Kath I think George's 'cot tent' might be what caught my eye last week. Not in need, so didn't look closely. Folded dimensions unknown.
Would you consider a hammock? Most people rubbish them, but maybe they've only used commercial jobs. We have 2 canvas 'beds' in the ute, and most motel beds offer far less comfort. I still use the same model 'bodgied' hammock (Blankets Inner, I do believe), as I was using in 1969.
If you're interested in the concept, let's know and I'll send details and photos.
If you're interested but don't want contact, just remember you'll need thermal insulation under you : they can get damn cold underneath around 3AM.
Good trip eh. Jeff.

Kath,
I would take your swag and your tent as suggested above, but your question was about comfort, we use an extra matress under the swag and this makes it good and it also rolls up on its own too.
Those self inflating mattresses would be suitable.
