Hi again,
We are now the proud owners of a 9/95 80 series cruiser. It has the 24 valve TD mtr, cruise cntrl, the most technical genuine alarm I have ever seen and a few other great goodies including a hot shower gadget and a
water tank underneath. It drives
well and has plenty of go.
Just wondered if anyone could advise us on the following:-
The sub tank is not emptying for some reason.
Is there much benefit in installing the marks adaptors part time 4wd system. It makes sense to me to have only 2 wheels beng driven, and to not be wearing out the rest of the front system. We plan on keeping the wagon foras long as it will go for. Wold be interested in any thoughts.

sub tank works off 2 solonoids underneath up the back. one solonoid controls return and one supply. usually if one solonoid is stuffed then weird thingsd happen like it will take from the sub and return nto the main. Are you sure it doesnt work.
Mine sits on full for ages before quickly emptying. otherwise the first place i would look would be the fuses
As for 2wd saving the front drive. great when it finally dies you will have a fully worn vehicle but a good front diff

I think the petrol and diesel fuel transfer systems work slightly differently, but
mine will stop pumping to the main before the main tank shows full (about three quarters). Just need to wait for the main tank to empty a bit more (never a long wait in a petrol 80 series) and then transfer the rest.
Plenty of stuff on the part time 4WD conversion in the archives. I had
mine done but as part of addressing some other things that needed fixing. My advice, if it works OK at the moment then leave it alone as you will take a long time to realise any savings in reduced wear, fuel economy, etc.

Dan,
Your sub tank should hold about 55L and depending on your fuel economy you should be getting about 300 km out of it. Your main tank is about 90 L. On
mine a 91 80 Series the gauge doesn't move until I have done about 100 km and then it starts to drop and as distance goes on it drops very quickly - therefore I use my odometer in preference to the gauge.
The sub doesn't drain into the main tank as it does on some other vehicles it is separate and if you forget to change it over you will run out of fuel - though it's not too hard to bled.
If the sub tank is full and you have change over to it and you are able to continue driving for a while (~300 km) then I would say your guage is cactus, otherwise if you run out of fuel very quickly then something else is broken with it - it will not switch to the main tank.
In regards to altering the constant 4WD - there are many opinions for and against and it is something that I have been considering for sometime but just haven't got around to doing it yet. The main reason would proberly for fuel consumption - some of the manufacturers of the kits claim up to a 10% saving in fuel.
