I note (on the map) there is a 'Quarantine' point at
Coen on the way to
Cape York?? Is there any prohibited items or stuff (apart from the booze situation) that can't be taken up that way??

I didn't see any quarantine at
Coen??? There was a
quarantine station somewhere along the road though... can't remember where so it could
well be around there... it only pulled us over on the way back down though and were only interested in food items etc...

From memory there is one just outside of
Ingham (on the
Townsville side) and they are concerned with the transporting of fresh fruit and vegies.

i've never seen a quaratine station per se outside of
Ingham.
There is a
rest area, which may have a
sign mentioning bananas, sugar cane etc though i can't recall after stopping there numerous times :-)
Fruitfly was (is?) an issue around these areas so this may have been the reason for the fruit/vege signs at one stage.

There is a
quarantine point. Just out of
Coen going north if I remember correctly. If I remember correctly (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) I think it was more interested in stuff travelling south.

Yes it's just north of
Coen . They were interested in fruit when I had a major dingle with them. My son remembered that he had a mango in his bag, after I'd assured them that we were fruit free. Some half cut dingbat went ballistic, and accused us of trying to smuggle fruit etc etc . One of my passengers wanted to deck him. After my side had calmed down, I had a yarn with the head paperworker. I don't think anyone else would of had the same problems after that, they became a bit more cautious towards tourists :)

So are they 'interested' in stuff going Northbound or Southbound?? As I see it- there wouldn't be much coming South that hasn't already been North ?? Apart from a croc. bite or two !!!

Its several years since, but they were interested in stuff going south. There was another fruit station around
Cairns, who strangely enough smiled, asked if we had any fruit, no ? Waved us through. Very different attitudes.

We went through there october last year and stopped thinking they would want to just
check as there is a community radio station constantly broadcasting (DPI one from memory for all thats worth) warning you about fruit etc...but on stopping it was closed but I think there was
bins provided. This was on a weekend so mabe they dont work on weekends or people are more honest then hahaha. It was more to do with mangoes and a little bug in them, there are signs warning of this up the cape. Hope you have a great trip.

Yes again, just north of
Coen.
No
check going north, full
check going south.
They don't want fruit or vegetables grown north of the checkpoint to travel south again, with the exception of goods purchased in a
supermarket.
They were a bit officious, but not a problem to us. They have little experience in communication with travellers, which is not their fault.
I was pleased to see at least 2 of them doing an honest (half?) days work for their money.

Surely there must be a web page somewhere that details their location and what you're not allowed to carry ?

Went through last july. Besides the fruit, They also asked me about anything made of wood that was not purchased from a
shop.

The Qld quarantine stop is north of
Coen as others have said. Do stop and have a look in the office. IT shows you exactly why they have an inspection station here for the trip back. You only have to stop heading south. They also give out a show bag of tourist info and when we were there last year were very welcoming. Remember that the Torres Staright slands are pretty close to PNG where they have many animal and plant diseases that we don't. As Steve used to say, do the right thing.

we got pulled up on the road and checked for fruit at the
weipa ,
bamaga turnoff
this guy was just pulling over any car that came towards him while he was driving
its not just the " actual points" to watch out for......AQIS is everywhere
just stick to the guidelines and you will be fine.. same as the grog laws.
the info is there..
don't complain if you get caught........as some others do
