I have a 94' Subaru Sportwagon RV.
Think it is also called an L Series

I am going on a long road trip around Australia in it and am under no illusions that it will go anywhere although I am hoping that we can take it into some places 2wd can't.

It has all standard parts and normal clearance.

Does anybody know if it would get me into the Bungle Bungles in the dry?
A friend of mine hired a Patrol and drove in but has limited 4wd experience and was not sure if it would be a good idea to take the Subaru in, as it does not have the clearance of a bigger 4wd.

The last thing I want to do is be a burden on some other driver having to tow me out or wreck the car.

What is the best way to find out about 4wd routes before I attempt them?
Have seen a few on this site, which was very helpful.

Hope you can help.

Cheers.

red up. We were in the Bungles in late July last year and we saw several "soft roaders" in there. There was even a 2 wheel drive there who was promptly escorted straight back out as it is a 4wd road only. The subaru should be fine but there are a couple of river crossings which might be tricky if they are fairly full. Of course it will depend on how you drive, but if you have experience it should be fine.

The road in is very tame, in my opinion really no need for a 4wd in the dry except that maybe then too many people would go into an already way busy area...I suggest you call the ranger beforehand just to check all is well.

Re other routes: I have always found the rangers to be very helpful. Give the nearest ranger's office a call. They will have first-hand knowledge about what the roads are like right now. Have a good trip, Casper.

Hi red up
May I suggest that if this is a once in a lifetime trip, that it would be a great idea to up grade the Subaru to a larger 4wd.
This way you could go nearly every were and not miss out on some of the great places we have in this great country of ours.
Just my thoughts Steve.

I endorse the bovine comment above - best idea is ring the ranger first to check - we went in last July - the only water was about 5m across and about 500mm deep at most, as I recall. Depending on the season and your timing , this depth could vary a lot I guess. The road is very rocky, but there are no real hazards as such - we just lower the tyre pressures and take it real easy on such terrain.

Haven't done that road, but having owned several of the old Subarus, they amazed me with what they could do, and how strongly they were built.

Red Up

Have been to the Bungle Bungles and it is well worthwhile. It is an easy drive and does not require 4WD. The road had been graded shortly before I went in and was very smooth and easy going.

Others have suggested checking with the ranger first - excellent advice as road conditions can change.
Life's great and it just keeps getting better

We were there last year in June and I don't think you would have any trouble in the Suby. I had a 92 Subvy before the current Hilux and would have been happy as larry to take it into the Bungles. Enjoy.
