Fredo
Can the auto hubs of the Challenger be changed to manual hubs??? Will manual hubs from an IFS Triton fit the Challenger. Is the auto hubs of the Challenger better than the auto hubs of the Toyota Hilux's/Surfs and are they prone to unreliability??? I changed the auto hubs on my Surf with AISIN manual hubs to stop the 24/7 spinning of the front diff and to save the CV's - will this do the same if I changed the same on the Challenger???
Also - Perhaps a question for Scotti in WA. Have you done your
suspension upgrade yet on your Challenger??? Would like to know how much height gain you achieved.

fred i also have a challenger and i think you would be wasting your money.i just got back from a hunting trip in the flinders and we drove some very tough countryand the challenger did not fail me once.a mate has a hilux and he was the 1st to admit the chall handled better than the hilux. people underate the challenger at their own peril stick withit and if it aint broke why change it.cheers dc.

DC - You are right... I also think the Challenger is under-rated. I currently have a 94 model 3lt Turbo Diesel Surf/4Runner and really do love it but I do spend some time on the hwy on hollies and was looking for something with a bit more grunt - and in this case something that uses less fuel. I currently get around 12.5-13lt/100km from a pidly 55lt tank some 400km from the tank is about it's limit.
I always been a Toyota man and know them inside-out but want to experience something new and different. I really love the look and style of the Challenger as it's around the same size of the 4Runner.
Whats mileage are you getting from yours???
Can you give me any more details - does it have a trip computer??? I am looking at a 98 model, black over gold with 69K and $23500, auto with towbar, sidesteps, cruise, LSD and looks to be immaculate with full service history.

G,day Fredo,
Firstly I have to say I agree with dc.
No havent yet upgraded
suspension but have looked into it in detail.
I did manage to raise front by approx. 20-25mm by simply adjusting torsion bar.
The rear however needs to have either springs reset with another spring added(approx. $200 - $250) or can buy new springs from ARB($220 each side plus fit).In both cases I have been informed that will gain about 1 inch extra lift.
I am leaning towards new springs(ARB) because adding extra spring will really stiffen rear end.
I am also looking at body lift which I've seen on a Triton.
Currently have 31x10.5 pirrelli tyres and when due for renew will go for 33x11.5 pirrelli to get more lift again.
All in all if I can gain about 3 inch from these I think thats plenty enough for me.
Cheers.

Scotti or DC,
Can you give me your mileage figures (both hwy/city cycles).
From what I can gather the Challenger's engine is one of the best and very fuel efficient.
Can you guys follow up on this???

Hi Fredo
Manufacturer milage stats:
9.5 L/100km h/way
12.5 L/100km city
November last year our family of six(we got another bench
seat in rear when bought car) went east on holiday fully loaded and towing a Jayco pop up. Our average fuel consumption was around 16.5 L/100km.Way better than we expected.
Generally on a full tank of 74 litres we can do around 450km on a 4wdriving day trip.
Hope this helps.

DC
The best we got on our trip east was 484km's on 65 litres ulp.We also towing pop up.
When I'm flogging the car in sand dunes and on beaches etc I get around 450 km's with left over on ULP.
Do you think premium helps much with milage to justify the extra 5c litre?
Also I found people look at me in disbelief when making the top of big dunes their Patrols,Landy's etc wouldn't make it up.
You have this too???????

we get about an extra 60 to80 ks a tank using premium . also premium is alot cleaner fuel and creates less wear on the engine which to me is good enough reason to use it. cant say why you get such poor economy but i drive a manual and always set cruz control when on highway which i find makes fuel consump more consistant. i also find for some reason it get alot better economy at 100ks compared to 110ks.and yes people do think the chall is a toorak trackter until they see the girl perform then they go bugger why did i spend all that extra money on a pathy or pajero when the chall does every thing we can do and it is the only 1 of the 3 that has a full step ladder chassis.cheers dc.

Our Challenger is auto which is probably why we use a little more fuel.I wouldn't exactly say poor economy though. When not towing or loaded to the hilt we can get 600km on country run.
Ive also been told that a
snorkel will greatly improve power and economy due to less restriction in air intake.Hooked on 4WDrivin'

well we can asume the reason you only get 450 is probley cos you were towing.one thing worth trying is fillthe car right up on starded uleaded and see what mileage you get then fill up with premium and compare. let me know how you go. i also have been looking at a
snorkel as i heard of the same benefits but it would be good for clean air intake for me as most my driving is in outback sa were you get lots of dusty roads. ill send you a picture of the old girl soon.cheers dc. let me know how you go with premium. one thing my mate told me ( hes a mechanic} is all petrol companys make premium unleaded and the crap that does not reach octan specs is sold off as standard so do you really want that in your pride and joy????
