Sorry folks if this is old news to you all , but it made me fall off my perch .
I was just reading the SCOOP and it looked all pretty straightforward , then I saw the four door model THEN I saw they were giving an auto box option .
EUREKA . I always thought I would have my current vehicle till I died , but this might tempt me .

Why on earth would you want an auto troopy?

Why not ? I use both auto and manual vehicles off road and prefer the auto.

I'll tell you why.Try using the auto on real steep descents(e.g. the Creb trek) in the wet and you will see why.
I think you will find that the majority of Troopy owners would go for a manual.

Crawler gears (if you can get them) and an auto is cool :-)

Been using autos for yrs, intend to convert my GU Patrol to Auto soon as i get the rest of the bits. Auto far superior in the 99.9% other aspects of driving/4wding except downhills, which once you learn how to drive them, is no issue.
On the thats why most buy a troopy - it isnt because of the gearbox. LMAO!!! funniest reason yet!
Why do you think the 3.0 grenade and breadbox's are so popular?? come in Autos..
Auto sales are
well over 75% of grenades according to local dealer. people buy what is offered. there is no 4.2 auto from Nissan, if there was, the 3.0 would be extinct. If a troopy was sold in Auto, they would take sales off breadboxes and others by tons..
YMMV.

If you know how to drive an auto then except for the tecnique a steep down
hill will present no problems at all. You just have to be proficient at left foot brakeing (aka drive over brake). There are a lot of 'old wives tales' about autos, almost all of them untrue. I have seen several manual box vehicles crap out in thick water (sloppy mud) when they got held up by another vehicle stuck in front of them. Silt in the clutch and it was goodnight nurse. Autos just sit in the gloop and wait their turn to procede. I also prefer autos in soft sand where you can get the wheels creeping forward without spinning.

What, you going say something like people who drive autos cant drive manuals?? I drove trucks round aussie for just on 8 yrs.. I can drive a manual/ranger/spicer box. 9/13/15/18's, straight or the bleep ty Z boxes. I'll still go for an auto...

Truckster, not sure if your follow-up was for me of Rambler. I was replying to Rambler. No mention of abilities of auto drivers V manual drivers, just that different tecnique required to get the best performance out of each type of gearbox.

yeah true, I might be tempted to an auto troopy, autos are really good but only because us humans are a lazy bunch and don't like work, changing gears where we don't get paid for it is really just too much, ask any rally driver, how many of any of them are into autos.....enough said

What a great topic!
Where's the challenge in selecting the right gear in soft sand when driving an auto?
Down-
hill; there's nothing better than knowing your low 1st will take you down a
hill that you will crap before the vehicle will.
Crawler gears? It's not a true comparison when you start changing things; with enough money you can make any vehicle more capable than standard capable vehicles.
LOL

kiwi If they knew how to drive they wouldnt be clutching while in the water. stall to stop and keystart to go, you dont need to be on a
hill to do that

I have been through the Gibson , Little Sandy and Big Sandy Deserts , the
Pilbara and the
Kimberley with my crappy auto . I have watched the other guys change gear every 30 seconds across rocks and dunes while I just rolled along relaxed and stressfree .
I do not go on 4WD club outings scaling moutains and I have always found the auto up to most tasks although occasionaly I would have loved a manual for the odd steep descent - but I always have made it down OK .
I have owned a manual Landrover , Nissan and 60 Series - I would never go back to a manual now - I'm spoilt .

Agree with Willie after having had manual 4wd's for 30 odd years, will have an auto any day now after getting the Humvee, it's always in the right gear especially in sand country. Like Willie says after the first desert trip watching the others do a million gearchanges you'd never go back to a manual.

Watched a documentery the other day from Africa if I remember correctly. They had a factory 4 door Troopy with the forward facing rear seats. One of those with 4 wheel coils would be my next car if sold in Oz. I would say the auto would also be good for the hire-a-fourby market.
As for the auto, it's personal preference isn't it? What you value about driving your car. I personally prefer total control in tight, twisty 4wd situations. I also think towing, especially off-road low-range towing is better in a manual. I have never owned an auto and don't think my first will be a fourby.

Up until now I have always had manual 4WD's but now have an auto 3.0 Patrol.
There is no question that I prefer the auto in every situation.....towing, low range, sand, rocks, tight twisty stuff, highway, around town, anything you can think of.
Maybe very steep slippery decent with a camper on the back might not be much fun but I'm not planning on doing that, not towing anyway.

Sorry to start a war on manual v auto and as the posts say stick to what you like best but having driven both Iwill stick with the manual. As far as the new Troopy goes I hope there is no electric windows, electric mirrors, and other fancy electronics as that is not what I call improvement.Iwould like to see a better dash arangement and also more comfortable seating with dual batteries as standard. If there is an auto version maybe we can get a few more to join the troopy fan club.
