There was a section in the Herald Sun today entitled “The cub killed for being cheeky” and accompanied by three photographs of the cub’s demise.

According to the article, this started with the cub getting over playful with one of the dominant males. This led to a swipe (cub) from one of the females and a blue between the two dominant males.

During all this, a female decided to kill the cub. The cub was taken off and eaten by the female.

I’m aware that males who take over a Pride will kill the cubs, but I’ve never heard of a female removing a young member in this way.

It would appear (to me ) the female was the matriarch and did it to appease the dominant males and maintain harmony within the Pride.

Anyone out there with African experience who could shed some light on this behaviour?

Regards

Kim
