Gday,
Ive heard of solar ovens before but nothing like that!
Do a search on google and you will come up with all different types, but none of them work if its not sunny.
Cheers

hmmmm i can feel a Mythbusters episode. I would be amazed if the thermal energy that could be absorbed by such a device would be enough to
cook food, it would sure warm it in direct sunlight tho.

already done! they set up 1000s of mirrors to try and get a mock boat to light up but all they succeeded in was making it slightly warm
Myth busted

Hi Guys,
Noticed this thread and amazed me!!! Obviously some of you older gentlemen would have been boys scouts, if not maybe go along to a Scout or Cub night and you will learn all about this subject.
Hay Box cooking comes to mind (along the same principle as the dream pot seen a caravan and camping shows but much less expensive, if you can get your hands on the old biscuit tins from years ago helps) for a standing
camp though not good if in a hurry. You can even use an umbrella covered with alfoil (solar energy), you can go as simple as you like or get very technical. Stand the umbrella open pointing to the sun (pretend its going to rain and you want to catch the rain water) place a billy on a tripod over the umbrella alfoil reflects the suns rays and hey presto eventually a boiling billy. I've even cooked 3 veg and meat using a empty shoe box, alfoil and a candle) really no need for anyone to go hungry if they know how. I also believe that a long time ago (years) Dick Smith had a product call the SUN GRILL have no idea if you can still get it.
Probably not what you guys are talking about but I just remembered what we did when I was involved with scouting this sort of thing has been around for years.
cheers
Debbie

surely the black paint would have to be on the outside if we are hoping to absorb the heat from the sun?

Many thanks, mater d'poule ...................
Got a great project from those sites for the grandkids to play with
AND
one slightly heavier for me to make in me shed ................. just the shot for carting along to the goldfields, loading up with a nice pizza to
cook while I'm gone a'huntin' !!
Will be ideal for unattended cooking ............ looking forward to trialling one.

I saw some at the "Gravity Discovery Centre" near GinGin (north of
Perth). They were constructed out of half 44 gal drums with double glazed lids. They were jet black inside and I think the drums were insulated on the outside.
I was reading the spiel on them and thought "that's pretty cool". I even thought of knocking one up myself for fun - but like a lot of things - haven't found the time for it.
I was surprised at how hot they were was inside.
As far as I'm aware they work quite
well.
Cheers
Stephen J.

Kathmandu's store in Fortitude valley had a solar oven for sale. Saw it about 12 months ago. Looked quite bulky with fold out reflectors.
