Plus it has depth sounder - good for creek crossings:)
The now discontinued Magellan FX324C Chartplotters were popular - you could run DiscoverAus from them. Main issue of using a plotter is of course they are bolted to car. If you have any plans of moving more than 10 metres away from the car to do some real exploring you will need a handheld as
well...so a more universal set up (eg PDA or Large screen handheld
GPS) is the better value for money.
Cheers

GPS position,
GPS altitude and topographical mapping to give pilots a vivid depiction of potential terrain hazards. ] [Terrain proximity cautions and alerts pop up as digital thumbnail images in the lower left-hand corner of any page whenever a potential
hazard conflict looms ahead. ]

Hi Phillip
Friends of
mine use the Navmans , which come in a large variety of screens and work pretty
well - but with generally less options as regards mapping than Garmins. 5-7 inch VGA screens seem to be most popular , usually $1000 up.
From work I've done I've decided that Garmin 3.8 inch screen model 276c and its cousins are the best around.

The Navman would on,y be suitable for Marine use , Knowing the quality of Navman's you probably can't install any other mapping software except marine.

I'm not up with the gobbledegock on chart plotters etc, but for the last 3yrs or so I've had and use a Furuno GP32, for what I want it works a treat.
