I've got the TDV6 Disco 3 and I couldn't give a toss about its resale value. I like it so much I'm going to keep it forever. I find myself looking for any excuse at all to get in it and drive it. It's the only one of 7 fourbies I've owned (and countless others I've driven for work) that makes me feel feel that way!

I would have thought you to embellish the Cruiser a bit more than the Patrol, but even you admit to a quote like that.....Good onya for facing facts LOL!!! ;-)))

Spot on, you wouldn't waste your dollars buying rubbish like a 4wd magazine.

I'm guessing that Nissan had a large add in that particular magazine to get positive comment like that.

We bought a GQ 3 L petrol Patrol in Aug 92 for $32.

Sold it to a dealer in June 95, with 75 on the ODO for $26. Couldn't be bothered selling it privately, probably a silly move LOL.

I was very bloody happy with that. No idea how things are these days, but I reckon Nissans hold their value OK.

More cruisers of all sorts are used in Mine Sites, by government agencies in remote places with indigenous clients etc.

There's a simple explanation to everything.

I managed to get my auto patrol for close to $51K at that time the cruiser was about $26K more for the same specs as far as all the extras etc. I would have liked the cruiser however common sense prevailed and I managed to get a nice van for the difference. I would still like a cruiser one day.
My old HJ75 went out the door with some 300,000Km on the clock for the same price as I paid some five years previously. Engine has since had some dollars spent since I sold it but it's still going.

could only find one 04 TD gxl with a quick look in saturdays paper and it was advertised for just shy of 60k ----- Which was more than brand spanking TD patrols advertised.
One thing I doubt red book has allowed for is the relative scarcity of both the TD cruiser and 4.2 TD patrol on the market in late model form
Either is the raretype of vehicle that sell themselves with people ringing around looking for them so top dollar can be asked. compared with a v8 cruiser or 3.00litre patrol

As far as mine use goes, this may change in the future as some of the big mines (like BHP) have got there oh&s gurus saying they wont buy toyotas (70 series, which is the bigest market for landcruiser) because they have no air bag. Some of there choices are still toyota with hilux being a replacement for the utes.

Like everyone says, there are Cruiser people and there are Patrol people. Same as Holden and Ford people.
Most times when people buy a car, they buy because they like that car.

BUT there is a reason why on nearly every cattle station and mine site you only find Toyota's. That is Toughness, reliability and resale.

I have never owned a Nissan and probably never will. It comes down to personal choice and at the end of the year a big V8 with 2 Turbos. How are Nissan going to compete with that.

When I bought my 2005 L/C Gxl, I waited till the run out deals and saved over $12,000 at least that compensates a little for deprecation. This will also help in getting us one of those V8's

Looking forward to reading the reply to this post.

Cheers

I will tell you a story that I have posted before.

Telstra were using Toyotas and having nothing but problems. Two representatives came from Japan to Katherine and were taken out and shown what Telstra were using the vehicles for. The two Japanese gentlemen advised that the Toyotas were not made to do that sort of work.

Telstra now uses Patrols. They put old man emu suspension on them. No other modification is necessary. They have not had a problem with the patrols and swear by them.

I must add however that they use the 4.2 TD. I have to think what is going to happen when the 4.2td is no longer available and they have to use the 3.0 ltr.

"That is Toughness, reliability and resale."

You may also like to consider proximity of dealer backup, spares availability and the investment in training of in house service departments. These items are hard to argue, unlike the others which are essentially subjective.

I would say that is more about Telstra being tight Ar**s.
Buy cheap cars more profit.
And if you could ever believe a word that comes out of the mouth of Telstra

Davoe has a good point comes down to driver.

I wasn't going to bother replying to Davoe's comment because it wasn't worth commenting to. The facts I related are true. Toyota drivers/owners may not want to hear it or believe it. To be so non-objective and dismiss it as Davoe left me with the thought that his comment was not worthy of a reply.

The Telstra employee who informed me of this is a person of high integrity who I believe. I suggest that you stop being so prejudgemental and check out the facts for yourselves.

I worked for Telstra 10 years ago and I remeber they had problems with the Cruisers front 'A' pillars cracking at the roof. The had to install an unattractive brace as Toyota wouldn't cover them under warranty.

Lies, damn lies and statistics.

Mining fleets would account for a significant percentage of sales. Work vehicles book values would be depreciated / written off to near zero. Doesn't take too many of these to alter the stats.

Nissan's in mining are rare as rocking horse poo hence the false reading. It's Toyota country all the way I'm aftraid.

Try researching the stats for private purchasers only.

I love this forum. Any excuse to get into the Tojo vs Nissan thing, usually a good laugh or two along the way as well.

Still, if depreciation is a big issue for you, here is a tip. Don't buy a big 4WD and flog it around the outback. Whoops, that's what most of us do.

I had a giggle over the discussion some time ago about average running costs and, from memory, the petrol 100 series was the most expensive. Fair enough, but is a bit like comparing the running costs of two different ocean liners. They are both bloody expensive and the difference is at the margins. Again, if thats what motivates you, buy a Prius and enjoy the country from the blacktop.

Good fun though.

Matt.

Hi Robin

Most large mining companies or telstra ect, call tenders for vehicles, and in most
cases TOYOTA with the huge mark up in prices can drop theres to well below
Nissan,s with special fleet deals. I used to be involved with this caper in
LOCAL GOVERNMENT several years ago.

In 2002 I couldn't buy a brand new 100 series for 47k, but I could get a patrol with a bullbar and towbar drive away 47k.

If I had the extra $27000+ for the landcruiser I still would have bought the Patrol and got a camper trailer!!!!!!

Any vehicle is "worth" only what the market [ the buyer] is willing to pay , now if you looked at market share [sold vehicles] it is a reverse with tojo outselling nissan every day ,why? because of a percieved price= quality mindset ,, both companies are in the business of selling NEW vehicles and with the amount that tojo sells it stands to reason that being more vehicles on the 2nd hand market the price level is a % point or 3 less than nissan , does that mean a 2nd hand nissan is worth more than a tojo ?? think not.

Hi Alloy

I don't see that as a logical arguement - except insofar as it is created by overpricing.

The same amount of people had the chance to buy either up front , to change the buying pattern something has to change , you could argue several things though -

1/ People with less available cash buy 2nd hand <- reasonable statement

2/ Vehicles a few years old are more likely to be taken into bush <- also reasonable statement

3/Most people buying these new vehicles have no interest in there bush use and want just the latest big capacity Toorak tractor <- seems plenty of evidence for this statement.

I guess we get into conjecture from here , and mine is that I go with no.3
and what follows from this is that as they get older , the biggest purchase group just loses interest and the group more likely to use them later in life as intended probably think that Nissan + accessories + change is better value than a Tojo by itself.

Hi I dont think it matters, it is the age old Ford- Holden syndrome, no other two 4 Bs will inflame passions like Cruiser & Patrol, Landrover have tried to make it a threesome with very little result. I have a Cruiser 80 series and my brother in law has a Patrol, I will say this, my brother in law has spent a significant amount of money to get the Patrol to the same or better performance than my Cruiser. That being said, I love both vehicles there is no other to hold a candle to either.
When quoting statistics and resale be carefull to compare apples to apples, The Prado, which is also classed as a Landcruiser, is a toy when compared to the big two.
