Hi we've just bought a Jayco Swan 1988 and I thought originally that they all come with a Queen size bed and a Double bed. As it only comes with 2 double beds and we are thinking of replacing the canvas has anyone modified or can it be done to change one double bed to queen.

If we changed the brackets and the sliding board to queen size, when we replace the canvas does anyone know if this can be done? I would love to know whether anyone has done this to their trailer.

Yes it can be done. Wherever there are big caravan yards there is nearly always a canvas/vinyl repairer who can do that sort of work close by.

I looked into fitting a slide out bed to a Jayco Penguin and having entirely new canvas. The cost of the canvas wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be.

A simple check to see if there your 1988 swan has enough length in the body of the camper to have a queen size bed as well as a double bed is to check the gap between both beds before you slide them out but after you wind the top up.
Our 2003 Dove, which comes std with a queen and double bed has a about a 200mm gap between both beds when they both are push into their travelling positions.
If the gap between you two double beds is enough to allow for a queen size bed to be fitted then the it should be a mater of extending the inside edge of the bed base to allow for a queen size matress.

As long as the extra bit of bed doesn't stick out, into where you would sit to eat yer dinner!

I suppose it doesn't really matter if the rear bed was extended.

Thanks for the tips. I believe there is plenty of gap space to allow this but no doubt I would still need to also extend the length of the canvas when replacing it so that when the bed is pushed out the canvas will accommodate the extra length.

Hope this doesn't sound too confusing, I'm just having a blonde moment.

What I was suggesting would mean that you wouldn't need to extend and alter the canvas. You leave the canvas and bed slides as they are and simply extend the inside edge of one of the the bed ends to allow for a queen instead of a double size bed. The only concern is, like Muzzgit siad above is, that you would want to make sure that the queen bed does not overhang into a seating area (or cooking area) when it is set up.

I've also realized I wouldn't be able to convert the rear bed as the robe and dining seat is at the end of the bed. I'm better off extending the front bed adding new queen bed sliders and having a new canvas with the extra length.
