Hi all, we are travelling the GCR in August with another couple, the plan at the moment is to have first camp somewhere between Kalgoorlie and Leonora, has anyone got a good camping spot in that area and/or advice on camping in that area.

Also what is the Tjukayiria Rd house like for camp no 2.

Any advice/secret spots on that road would be much appreciated.

Cheers

D

between kal and leonora do the golden Qust discovery trail (guide book available from all Kal newsagents) via ora banda, exept head to Daveyhrst from Siberia Via Lake Wangine. A quick detour will allow you to see the satues at lake ballard. Befor takine te snke ill road via granite creek to Leonora. Camp wherever you feel like
Alternatively take Yarri Road Nth of Kal and cmp at Niagra dam or around Kookynie.
If you have the time the bitumen is easily avoided and you can take in pleeenty of goldfields history and natural formations

Thanks for that Davoe, sounds like there is quite a lot to see out there. That is one part of WA we haven't been before but it has been on our wish list for a while.
Thanks again for info.

Cheers

As Davoe says, if you want to avoid Kalgoorlie, turn left at Coolgardie and go through Ora Banda - there are many good spots off the road near Ora Banda.

Second Night we found a gravel pit on the left side of the road - drove through it and found a great spot - 317 kms east of Leonora and 92 kms west of Tjukayrla

Third night was not brilliant - camped in a thicket approx 464 kms from Tjuk

Next night was on the banks of the Shaw CreekEast of Lasseters Cave (no camping signs all around Lasseters) 192kms East of Warakurna Roadhouse

Thanks for that Trekkie, I wasn't thinking of 'no camping areas', I don't know why as we always think of it anywhere else we go!!!!! Why would it be any different out there!!!!
The gravel pit sounds good.

DW,

If you're simply looking for a "quick overnighter" and not a tourist spot, then the old haul road to the Orient Well minesite is ideal. It's on the righthand side of the road, heading north, about 30kms north of Jeedamya Station on the road to Leonora from Menzies.

It's a wide (very wide), old wire gate with "No Entry" signs all over it - ignore 'em. They were put there when it really was a haul road. It's not been used as such for about 18 years.

It's a wide road, so you can easily turn around in the morning to get back out onto the bitumen. There's plenty of wood for a fire and you won't get bothered by anyone. The only traffic on it these days is the odd prospector and they won't bother you. They're usually all in bed by 9.00 o'clock!

Just get far enough down it so you can't hear the traffic on the Leonora - Kal road . Don't worry about running into anything - the abandoned mine site is about 15 kms away from that turn off.

It's then 35 kms to Leonora in the early morning - just in time for a "Bilbo Burger" at the servo in Leonora,,,,,,,,,,,sausage 'n egg sandwich with Barbecue Sauce. They help keep my cholestrol under control - purely medicinal you understand ;). The bigger the number, it has to be better doesn't it? Well, doesn't it!!

That road leads to what was a top spot for gold nuggets known as "Butterfly" - all gone now though. I got my bits before it all went,,,,,,,

Agree with above post - Niagra dam is a good overnighter - after a few at Kookynie pub .
Tjukayiria roadhouse was okay too , when we were last there , also a few places near the sandy blight junction rd .
