I am interested to find if anyone can comment on effect the difference in the front and rear track on the new 70 series might make to steering on rutted country roads or tracks .It seems the front track is 95 mm wider than the rear

I'd imagine it would behave almost exactly the same as the 78, 79 and 105 Series it's replacing seeing they all share the same running gear!!

According to the toyota published spec sheets, the new 70 series is actually different to the old 78/79 series in that respect.

Using the std cab chassis as an example:
79 series. Front track 1435mm, Rear track 1420mm
70 series. Front track 1515mm, Rear track 1420mm

The 70 series blurb actually mentions the 'new wider front track'.

Now 15mm difference in the 78/79 series isn't too bad, but 95mm (nearly 4inches) seems like a big difference to me, making placing the wheels where you want, driving in ruts, and sand driving, etc pretty awkward.

Real shame that Murran3 , and hard to believe

Seems like they did it to fit wider engine.

Troppy have never been the best in this area but now with uneven tracks it will be harder to negotiate ruts , and will tend to make it oversteer more.

Bit of a dog's breakfast isn't it.
I think I'd be investing in some aftermarket offset rims for the rear real fast.

Spacer plates are not mostly legal now but I have a set for my Patrol and can space out rims as required, as I have several sets of wheels with different offsets.

Meant to say also that it will have to leave a 95mm wider sand track making it worse in sand as well.

Hi, My 78 troopie already had a wide track in the front. With the skinny tyres on it the front tyres stuck out about 1 inch past the guards and the rears were about 1.5 inches inside the guard. This doesn't sound too much different to the new ones.

Tour boy,
The issue here is nothing to do with the guards.

The track is the distance between the centres of the tyres. The issue is that the new model has a wider front track - 95mm wider than the rear, so that when you're 4wding, the rear tyres are not following the fronts, so are more likely to bog down.

No worries Phil, I was only using the guards to show that there was already a substantial difference in the track between the front and rear already.
