Hi,

I am looking at heading down to Davies Pain & Mt Pinibar(Vic High Country) at easter. At this stage 3 cars going - 96 Hilux (lift & Snorkel), 89 Vitara (standard) and 2000 Pajero (standard). can anyone tell me about the conditions and what I should expect the crossing of the Murray to be like?

Davies High Plain Tr is graded as steep, Tom groggan Tr is graded as steep, and Mt Pinnabar Tr is graded as very steep all are good for the vehicles that are going Mt Pinnabar is not recommended if towing a trailer.

Check Vic Parks to see if the tracks are open, with the seasonal closures and the fires they may not be open, cause i think they close around march, april or may.

You might be interested in this link Site Link which shows much of the area in general - I would have thought the Murray crossing would be low, but would also be interested in current levels..

Davies Plain, Pinnibar, McCarthy's, Limestone Ck etc are typical high country tracks: generally good and not especially difficult, but some steep pinches and rocky or loose in places. Hilux and Paj will have no problem (if tyres are OK) but the Vitara in your party will need to take care, esp with careful wheel placement in some spots. We used to have a Vitara. Great little car but limited by ground clearance, power (if loaded up) and open rear diff. We used to struggle on some of the rocky tracks in the high country that are no problem in the Prado.

The ascent to Pinnibar from Tom Groggin is, as someone said, very steep and rather loose in places. It goes up in several stages, with flattish sections in between (like Billy Goat Bluff). The final ascent to the summit is not the steepest bit but quite rocky. Don't try Pinnibar if wet. Vitara should lighten load and lower tyres to say 20 or 22 psi for that section.
