Hello Everyone,

I have a 2003 100 series 4.2 diesel landcruiser that tends to stutter when I accelerate heavily or when it is under load (eg going up a steep hill). Also, when I am driving it around town you get a sensation of the vehicle hiccupping/lugging when you accelerate. All this along with some pretty serious black smoke when accelerating and generally poor fuel economy. Does anyone have any ideas what is happening here? The vehicle is still under warranty and I'm trying to get things sorted and would like to get a bit of a handle on whats happening so I can deal with the mechanics/dealer with more confidence.

Cheers
Craig

in very simple terms - too much fuel and not enough air - not so simple is the reason for........there are a few sensors around the fuel system that could be reading inaccurately or it could be just as simple as a blocked air screen/filter. there may also be an injector or 2 or a fuel supply problem but tackle the simple first. any dealer and or diesel place should be able to sort it out easily and quickly - after all they aren't that rare a breed. rgds
Slow down and relax......

We had a similar problem with our Cruiser. It would sort of "flutter" at a certain rev, surge when you backed off and very lightly re applied the throttle and blew smoke(tail gate very sooty).
End result was injector pump and injectors were stuffed and all had to be rebuilt. Now the bad bit, ours was under warranty also and when it came time for the repair"na sorry mate Toyota wont cover it, has had contaminated fuel go through".Went through all the arguments like "whats the Toyota fuel filter set up for" blah blah blah.Nope they wouldnt budge. In the end we went 50/50.Not good for a vehicle that I told them was not right when we bought it.
Good luck.
Also have you changed the fuel filter or it could be sucking air somewhere in the fuel system.

Which diesel engine?? 1Hz or 1HD-FTE??

I'd have my money on a blocked fuel filter.

Did this problem start overnight or slowly detiriate over time?
bad dose of fuel will give the symtoms you have decribed, I just got a new set of injecters done(100,000kms) gained a little power,8-10% fuel economy improvment, dramatic reduction in black smoke especially over 3000 rpm.
I have read on this forum that some have got well over 200,000 ks on there injectors, mine wouldn't,they wern't THAT bad and I questioned the wisdom of doing the job in the first place($550) but it's done, and right for the simpson in May.

The trouble is most likley the EGR valve on the inlet manifold the TPS on the injector pump needs to be set correctly there is a service instruction on the problem,or you can block the small hose going to the EGR valve off with a small ball, what is happening is the EGR vave is opening and closing as you are driving along and cutting off the air
