To all of you out there that put there hand up on the window/windscreen to stop that rock from bleep tering your windscreen from a vehicle coming the other way on a dirt road doesn't work. They just tested out the theory on Myth Busters and had no effect what so ever just to prove that your hand pushed against your windscreen does not absorb anything against your screen cracking. I for one have always done this but obviously was just luck that I have never had a broken screen that was until easter weekend on the pacific highway.MMMMM and I never had my hand against the windscreen at the time. they also did that one where a winching cable snaps and tested it on a pig carcass . it didnt cut the skin ,but it wouldve left a good bruise on any unsuspecting standing -by beer drinking, finger pointing yobbo.

your first paragraph (use sand paper and floss with winch wire etc) confirms your statement that you do certainly have AIDS.....Aquired Imunne Deficiency Syndrome

They were using non laminated windscreens. Methinks all windscreens in Australia are laminated. Putting your hand against the windscreen will absorb some of the impact.

Trouble is the stone that busts your screen is always the one you don't see. Had mine busted last year north of Newman thrown up by a speeding Mining Ute on the gravel road. Rock the size of my fist hit the windscreen. Gave the missus a BIG fright. Luckily the windscreen didn't delaminate.

I always put my hand up there....drive one handed most of the time anyway.

I wouldn't trust all the things the Mythbusters bust. Remember its a TV entertainment show!

Yeah true Willem is only a show, I think I will still put my hand on the screen when possible. As you said the one that hits the screen is the one you dont see as in my case at easter got it right on the edge of drivers side and so far has headed about halfway cross my drivers wheel think it will take an uphill run towards the top. Luckily I'm covered so wont cost me anything only thing is they use windscreen obriens and have heard some nasty stories on how rough and bodgy they are but have never used them myself. I know a bloke who fits them but will cost me about $175 fitted for a new one if I pay for it myself. I just worry about them scratching the paint around the edges and behind the screen and puting a new one in and rust due to them not being carefull or touching up where they scratch the paint. Yeah I know I'm a fussy prick but hey we all work to pay for things that we want to last. Regards Steve M

I don't need some stupid TV show to tell me that idea from the 60s and 70s is utter BS if the rock hits directly where your hand is all you will get is a knuckle full of glass splinters, and Laminated screens are double sheets,

I'm not completely convinced. Some windows are virtually bulletproof and some are just waiting to pop. I broke a shovel and dented (!!!) the base of base of a fire extinguisher trying to get into a rolled over Holden ute once via the window without success and I am not the shy retiring type. Just rolled another up another window once in a Valiant and it bleep tered without warning.

There's more to this than simply shooting glass with an air rifle to prove / disprove this. I saw their methods, but as some wise person once said - the devil's in the details. I'd want to talk to an expert first.

Yeah when I worked for Toyota we use to have the front drivers windows popping alot due to the heat in summer time. Use to be the old Lexcens (commodore). Use to just bleep ter with out warning never worked out what is was but seemed to happen less if we switched the air vent to fresh instead of recirculate. Might have been build up of pressure ?? I notice they just did the tailgate up/down thing too - in the states a lot of people think leaving their tail-gate down or taking it off will improve the fuel efficiency of their pick-up.

Oddly enough the best fuel efficiency they got was with no tailgate and one of those flappy plastic nets (got the same with or without the tailgate or with it down). I didn't hear whether it was a statistically significant difference and number of trials though...

Does anyone remeber the big plastic suction cups that people used to stick on their windscreens to stop them from getting busted.

Its a matter of luck.

Have been commuting for 16 years from Perth to Bindoon every weekend. 10 years in Pajero, broken windscreen every year.

2 years in Commodore, 2 years in Falcon, 2 years in Forrester not even a chip, windscreens are much more laid back and had theory that sloped windscreen are less suceptible to being hit with direct hit, rather than a glancing blow, but theory destroyed when this year ( 3 months) big chip in new LC100, (windscreen about the same angle as Forrester) and big chip in Toyota Prius (winscreen much more laid back than most cars on the road, and hardly needs windscreen wipers at speed) both happened when being passed.

Perhaps I drive slower in the new Toyotas to save fuel.....

Hi there Go-N-Gray, my wife copped one as well on her new 4 door Yaris, The screens are also very sloped and as you said we found even in very heavy rain it seems to just fly up over the roof and still only have the wipers on low speed, but yes still managed to cop a stone chip a week after she bought it on the F3 heading up the coast car going in the same direction as she was and in the lane beside her. Had my mate come out straight away to drill it out and take the pressure off it. Can hardly see it now just a tiny dot. $1200 for a new screen if it happens to get broken, so took the windscreen cover out on it with the NRMA only an extra $57 so is well worth it. Regards Steve M

I think you will find that the finger/hand on the windscreen was applicable to Armourplate screens & not laminated ones.

Remember most laminated screens are structural these days. They are glued in - not floating in a rubber gasket. I seriously doubt whether the force you could apply with your hand would make any difference at all. My 2 bobs worth
