We spent a few night there in July 2004.
Yes it is a tourist venture but when we were there it was pretty low key.
Nice young people running it.
Best steak I have had anywhere.
Assuming it was local meat I was astounded to find it came from King Island!!!
What I assume were the workers dormitory's have been turned into reasonable accommodation and there was a van park, albeit very few trees.
Being so close to the major fishing area's obviously helps a lot but we would definitely go there again.
I have friends that have stayed there as their base on more than one time.

I used to stay there when I was fishing Shady Camp with a guide called John Dagan . After we got sick of that we would go over to Carmour Plains and blast a few pigs for the chiller .

Pt Stewart was a great place with that big swimming pool . I have no idea what it's like now - backpackers paradise maybe ?

You've probably already done this, but just google "Point Stuart" and you will find the site telling you all about it.

We were there in 2000 and it was a pretty laid back (reminded me of an African Safari) type club.

We went further on trying to get to the actual Point Stuart but the road was blocked by the gate into Carmor Plains. We met one of the owners and got talking...a few years earlier we'd met one of the daughters at the Broome cattle saleyards. Anyway, the young man at Carmor asked us up to the station but we thought we'd be imposing and didn't go. We camped at Shady Camp instead. I wish now that we'd taken him up on his offer because now it, too, is a Wilderness Reserve Resort with boar and buffalo hunting plus photography tours. All good, but would've been nice to see it as a working cattle property first.

Rick
I used to work for DPI in Adelaide and visited the Pt Stuart and Mudginberri meatworks for a few days in 1979 and again in 1982 to see how the meat inspectors were faring. One of my most vivid memories of Pt Stuart during my visit in 82 was a visit one day by the Darwin RAAF personnel to play a cricket match against the meatworkers. The 'oval' was located somewhere in the middle of the Carmour plains and the sight of the stumps set up in the middle of a perhaps 10 square mile cricket pitch was amazing. Of course the RAAF, and the meatworkers, came supplied copious quantities of beer (read a semi-trailer load)and there was a huge hungi of barra, chicken, etc cooked over hot rocks and covered in banana leaves - a top day. I dont think anyone would remember the cricket result.
I drove into Pt Stuart last July during a Kakadu trip but did not stay there or go into the 'resort' buildings. I didnt think the place looked as good as it did as a meatworks, but perhaps I was looking through rose coloured glasses before. The old meatworks building is still there, unoccupied. The resort looked a bit ordinary, but I am sure the best part of staying there is the fishing etc.
The roads in to Pt Stuart and Shady Camp is good - 2WD and Vans OK. Judging by the stink of the rubbish bins at Shady Camp there is still a lot of barra about, and we also saw about 20 crocs within 500 metres of the barrage.

Hey Dalb

A mate of mine was there 2 weeks ago and caught a 1.3 mt Barra at the mouth of Tommy cut creek.

I've been to Shady camp more times than I can remember, Trust me when I say you left a 0 off when you said 20 croc 500 mts from the barrage.

The last time I was there I counted 130 pairs of eye's on the fresh water side alone, In fact Shady camp has the highest population of Estuarine Crocodiles any where in the world.

Most of which are 4 mts +.

Cheers Steve.

gday Dalb,,,,,as a DPI bloke you would have know my step dad....tom??????
I actually grew up there, well every dry we were there from the mid 70's all the way through till it closed down as a meatworks.
I don't think you were wearing rose coloured glasses when you were there as a DPI bloke,,,,it was certainly a wild bit of country back then.
You would know Jay from Mudginberry as well ???????? He is over here these days,,,around Bunbury the last i heard.
It was a huge mountain of a Moari bloke by the name of King who did most of that hungi. Pommy Chris shot the pig for it and Domenic from the mouth of the rivesupplied the barra.
I remember that cricket match,,,,,we won :):):)

Hey Doggy Tease.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but Jay passed away 2 years ago.

Mudginberry is now a dry area and safe haven for the black fella's that don't want any humbug from gunbung (alcohol).

Cheers Steve.

G'day, its Dalb again.

Re Mudginberri, when I was in Jabiru last year talking to a guy, whose name I cant recall, in an aboriginal art shop, I told him I had purchased a bark painting at Border Store in 1979. We got talking about Mudginberri and it turned out this guy was the manager of Mudginberri and he said he had buried his friend Jay Pendarvis 2 years ago. He told me where the gravesite was, but I was unable to find it in the short time I had. Anyone who knew Jay would probably agree that he was 'a man among men', but he apparently died a broken man in the aftermath of the famous Mudginberri industrial dispute.

to Steve,
thanks for the info above - the 20 crocs I saw was in just a few minutes around mid-day - I am sure the water would light up like a Christmas tree at night under spotlight.....

to Rick (Doggy Tease),
which Tom? I knew a few - you can contact me at brian.dalby@awbc.com.au if you like.

cheers
Cheers, Dalb

Hey Dalb.

Yeah the industrial dispute was just the start, He actuary took the unions to court and won, $2.000.000 from memory.

He paid his worker above board wages for incentive and the unions took him to task.

The one that broke him was a few years latter, the Gov brought about the BTEC program and that was the end of the Buffalo industry.

Cheers Steve.

Gday Dalb,,,,,,,Tom Turnbull mate. Do you know the name?,,,,,,,sad to hear about Jay, he was a top bloke, and as you say " he was a man amongst men".
I'm easy to find, just click on my profile and send me a message.
Gday Steve. Has it changed much from when it was a meatworks?
There were always crocs at Shady Camp,,,you just had to know where they were :):):). Is there still a proffesional Barra fishing boat at the mouth of the Mary......the guy who was up there went by the name of Domenic???????
Swim creek was alwaysgood for a feed. Stop before the crossing and turn left,,,,head down a little bit till you reach a hard bend in the creek, there is a deep hole there that always had a feed of barra in it.
My mum took me for a drive one day when i was about 9 or 10,,,,,we went past the original station ruins and headed for the coast,,,,eventually finding Stuart Tree. Sheez the government went ape over that.......:) Point Stuart was the same as Mudginberry for years,,,real good wages,,,then the union got in and that was the end of it.....:(:(:(. Makes me sad to think of what they did to that place.
