Is the wiring loom the same in a HZJ105 and a FZJ105??
As everyone that owns a Cruiser there are hundreds of extra plugs unused on the wiring loom and was wondering if the looms are the same.
I am weighing up my options for a power upgrade, priced a s/h 24v 80 series engine/g/box combo, $16500.Bit more than expected.Could turbo the 1Hz but hearing the latter ones with all the emmission crap on them also have weaker/lighter pistons and you have to be very careful about heat.
That leaves bolting in a 4.5 petrol engine.Great reliability, heaps of power, uses more fuel but that dont worry me.Would spend about $5000 on a turbo/intercooler and have around 125kw,4.5 petrol has around 155kw(from memory)std and you can pick up the motors cheap at wreckers.
Dont want to upgrade as would loose too much on change over plus have vehicle setup how I like it,just lacking in power towing our camper.
Thanks guys

I did a bit of reasearch into this when my leg stuffed up and I looked at putting an auto in to my 105. According to those I spoke to the looms are different.

I also had a look at the book for headlight replacements and there was a variation from memory in the 105's.

I went the 4.5 after 100,000's km's in HJ's and 1HZJ's and love it. They are a cracker of a donk IMHO. 165kW standard, good torque and can be hot rodded up to the mid 250's if that's what floats ya boat.

Be advised the N/A diesels run the lighter R151 gearbox while the petrol has the heavier H151 which is another factor worth considering.

I'd just buy a nice 4.5 auto and swap the gear over as the diesel will be worth a few grand more to cover stamp duty. LPG in twin scuba tanks makes city driving cheap too while retaining the twin petrol tanks which can be upgraded to hold a bucket load of fuel for good off road range.

IMO, Always better in the long run, to change the vehicle, than change the motor.

I dare say you'll get more money for a HZJ105, than what you'll spend buying a similar vintage FZJ105. And you'll get the stronger driveline, and won't be faced with 1000 electronic issues. Both have rigid front end.

Gday as above, everything in the wiring and fuel systems is different in the 4.5
Dont do a 4.5 swap, sell yours after you buy a 4.5 auto...u will get more that way.... if you tow, get a factory turbo motor and box and transfer from a 80 series 95-97 and it bolts straight in...7-10k max, dont be fooled by the 24v, as only the starter is 24, ll else is 12...some wreckers are so far away from reality with motor prices...yes they are hard to find, but now 2 models superceeded....7-10k for the motor...the cheapest way around this is to look for a wreck on pickles.com ... and harvest what you need from it for 6k outlay, then sell the rest and make half back...plus use what you need....u can also do this with a t/d 100 if you want to run electronic injection....the lot will bolt in, but heaps of wiring changes...thats why the hdft is such a good choice...you get the best 100 series they didnt make...compared to a $4000 turbo system, the 1hz you have will pull from idle better and be better in the bush, but the hfft will pull from 2000 like a train, use less fuel, and nothing beats them towing loads at any speed....

I think the 24V = 24 valve?

Your probably right :) The wreckers are not paying any more than 10k for a whole 79 series hdfte wreck , so that might be the best option...u get motor/box/part time transfer...and 4.1 diffs...however, a 100 series hdfte will be more model specific...i still think you would get a whole car for alot less than what that wrecker wanted...and plenty of spares...Just incase your interested, there is a wrecker in Archerfield who does the hdfte swaps...for roughly that price...all up drive out.
