Morning Team

For those that have not done the Sundown National Park I would highly recommend it. We did the drive on the weekend as per the Dirty Weekends away book and it was so nice to get out there and away from the big smoke.

Two questions I have that came up? Are you allowed to use dead wood from the park to make a fire? We didn't see any information regarding fire except for the information brochure at the gate that said " be careful with fire" there was nothing saying we can't use dead wood? There was a heap of already established fire places that we used but I want to get others opinions.

Then secondly the truck has developed a whistling noise...this noise is apparent when the car is moving and you have it in any gear, the whistling gets loader as you go faster but if you put the clutch in the whistling goes away.

Thanks

I agree with Col......Had this happen on my last Patrol and still drove for about 2000km before I got it fixed. Happened during the middle of my Kimberley Trip in 2005.....If it is your Thrust Bear get them to do the Clutch at the same time, little more outlay that can save money in the long run....Because they have to drop the gear box, two birds with one stone.....Good luck....A mechanic should be able to diagnose with just the sound.......The Nissan dealer in Broom diagnosed ours straight away though we didn't get it fixed until back in Perth.....

Hey Col

Not sure what a Thrust bearing does but a Google search turned up "Barstools and Lazy Susan turntables use this type of bearing"

LOL so may I could be so cheeky to ask what does the Thrust Bearing do?

Troll 81,

I wasn't saying it was the clutch but if it is your thrust bearing then get the clutch done at the same time....If your clutch is already a new one then don't worry about the clutch change.....

Oh I thought what you meant was that the Thrust bearing was part of the clutch kit..how much did you pay if you don't mind me asking?

Nissan did it in Perth and it was $1800???? including the clutch......I would say it will be over $1000 for it to be done as they have to drop the gear box.....Mind you Nissan is expensive for repairs.....Is yours a 2.8 or 3.0 or 4.2?

Geez Teabag, now I know why we don't get our mechanics done at Nissan, we had a clutch kit fitted a little while ago cost us just on $1000, a saving of $800, gee we are getting to like our mechanic!!!!!!!, if he moves somewhere else I think we may follow him. I'm assuming the the thrush bearing is not included in the kit.

Cheers

Dunworkin,

$1800 wasn't just the Clutch, it also was the thrust bearing.......To get the Clutch done is around $1000 to $1200 give or take......

Hi Troll 81.
Sorry to advise that the collection of firewood in national parks is a definite no no.
When I went to Mt. Moffat(carnarvon Gorge) the instructions form Dept. of Natural Resources told us where we could collect firewood before we entered the national park.
Regards.

G'day mate,
In QLD national parks it is illegal to gather firewood, even dead-fall. Must bring your own firewood (milled timber offcuts only) or use that which is provided.

The whistling sound, is it rev related?

How about with foot off the clutch? If it whistles then I'd say it's an air leak somewhere. If not then thrust bearing.

if you are in gear it's still there I thought it was a air leak but I think the sound is coming from the gearbox area

Troll i'm pretty sure that collecting wood from a NP is a no no, something to do with desturbing habitat, it's a BYO policy, well that's how it is in NSW, i would imagine NP QLD is the same.

I agree about the trust bearing too.

If the noise goes away when you push clutch in it's the thrust bearing.

If you have a noise is there when you push clutch in it's the main bearing.

either way it's a PITA

Baz.

Hi Guys.

Interesting subject collecting fire wood.

In the NT it seems we have one rule now.

Kakadu has a policy that you cannot bring fire wood of any kind into the park, and you can collect fire wood in the park only from a fallen tree.

This now applies to all other N.Ps in the NT except Uluru and that is because you can't have open fires there.

Up until last year you could collect fire wood and take it into all NT N.Ps except Kakadu which has always had the above policy.

On our resent trip through QLD, NSW, VIC, SA we were not able to have an open fire because of fire bans, but we did notice the different regulations on fire wood interesting.

Cheers Steve.

I just phoned the place that put in the Daiken kit about 5 months ago and the bloke said that they replace the Thrust Bearing when they put in a new kit so he said it's not likely the problem he said sometimes they need some adjusting but he said pop around and they will have a listen so I will go there tomorrow and advise the outcome. Thanks for the responses

Hi Troll,
Sounds like it may just be an adjustment if you have just had the clutch replaced, How much did it cost ? Leaving your foot lightly on the clutch pedal as you drive and change gears will shorten the life of the thrust bearing but I'm guessing adjustment is all that will be needed.
