G'day all,
Has anyone had their 2.8lt diesel (Hilux) engine rebuilt ? I've herd they don't last long after it maybe an extra 150,000km then its had it. Toyota quoted me $11,000 for a brand new one, just have to use my bits and pieces from my motor ie, injector pump, alternator etc etc. Money isn't the issue here, longevity is.
Any thoughts?

Rebuilt engines can last as long if the tolerances are up to standard.

It is possible to rebuild an engine to higher tolerances than when it came from the factory, finding someone that wants to do it is another thing.

You have to factor in how long you plan to keep it,most people change their vehicles every 5 years or so.

what year motor have you got???? I blew the head on a 92 model 2.8d ( 3L ), and even though i cut the labour down by doing alot of the work myself, i still got an exchange ( bare ) and the engine rebuilder used almost all of the components from the cracked head for about $1800.00. I think from memory a total motor exhange was about the $3000 or $3500.00 mark.

Cheers

Dan

If rebuilt right it should last as long or better than a new one IF rebuilt right and serviced every 5000kms.
Shop around for a new Toyota Genuine engine, some places have big discounts, look for around $9000.

I would be wacking a second hand 5L 3litre in it. It will bolt straight in no mods required. Dont get the 5LE as it is electronic and requires extra wiring etc and is totally different set up pump wise etc. I did have a file I think is at home on the home computer with a price of a full rebild kit for around $600/700 But obviously that is not including labour. I will have a look when I get home and see if I still have it. I had it as I had a 2.8 myself so kept it just incase. Will let you know. Regards Steve M

Sorry long haired nomad, have just spent the last hour going through all my files and for the life of me cant find it. It was posted on the forum probably about two years ago and I had kept it but some where along the line I've lost it. I wouldnt even know where to start looking in the archives Sorry about that. Unless some one else copied the supplier down when it was posted on here not sure. One thing I did forget to say depending on what year your hilux is and if it has ifs. If changing over to a 5L and you have solid frond end (leaf springs) you will need to change the sump over if you have IFS wont be an issue. My mate will be home soon and will give him a ring, he picked up a 3L for his last year and was 5g full rebuild. Will let you know. Just another option thats all. Regards Steve M

g'day Stephen, Ask your mate what sort of fuel economy he's getting from the 5L?
Im getting 9.5 - 10.5 l/100km. Thats around town or highway. As i do a lot of k's each year thats another thing i worry about.fuel economey and reliability.

Hi there long haired nomad, he's getting the same figures as you quoted. He has since whacked on a turbo running 8pound boost, holy bleep what a huge difference, goes like the clappers, will out run a standard 1KZ thats off the mark and up top. he doesnt drive it like that all the time but we lined it up against our other mate who has the genuine 1KZ SR5 and he couldnt catch us that was up to 140k then my mate backed off. Dont how much more it would have gone but was very impressed. If driving normally he's been getting 8 1/2 to 9 per 100 with the turbo on. The fuel usage has dropped with the turbo so thats a good thing. How long it will last for who knows. If he flogs the guts out of it not long. He has been giving it a bit with the turbo but you know how it is new toy it will wear off and he'l go back to taking it easy. I reckon the 2.8 and the 5L 3litre are as bullet proof as each other. The only reason the 2.8's were blowing up cause people dont service them. I sold myn with 297k on it and still had great compression I use to change oil and filter every 4k with out fail and was all documented that why it sold so easy. Myn was a 89 model SR5. I reckon if the bloke keeps up the services it will see another 300k. I am ringing him tonight. There was another place he was telling me about but forgot the name of it so will chase that up for you and get there details. They do rebuilds and have a good reputation. Regards Steve M

That sounds more like it, i helped a m8 install a reco 3L eng and it was $4500 plus if you spend 11k on engine from Toyota how much will the vechile be worth?

i service my Toyota 2.8 Diesel every 5k and touch wood is still going strong at 300kms.

Everyone is saying reco's are good but how long DO they last. I do about 45,000km a year I want the new motor to last at least 300,000km or more. The hilux is a '96 model live axle front end. The body and all running gear is ok, im just a bit worried about the motor. My last hilux a 89 model was good for just over 500,000km. I bought this in 2001 with 50,000km on the clock its now got 325,000kn on it. Troo Bloo how long ago did you install your mates 3L? The 11k from Toyota is for a brand newy. And yes the motor would be worth more than the car. But i want reliability not a trade in. Ill keep the hilux for another 10 years if the motor is ok.

Ring round a few wreckers. Alot of them are bringing in brand new complete engines. I recently sourced a V6 Jackeroo engine for $4000. Which was cheaper than HM could supply a rebuilt unit.
