I want a New Diesel cruiser or Prado but won't be in a position to get one for a while. I've been looking at short - medium term options and the Pajero NL 3.5 auto 1997 - 1999 looks like a good option. (less that $20,000)
It's going to be a family car as
well a trek/beach weekender and value for money, they seem hard to beat.
So...questions is...any reason why not?
I use to own 2001 model and remember the fuel consumption was a bit scary but other than that, great car to drive.
I seem to recall a conversation on the
forum some time back about SOHC V DOHC...so if anyone can enlighten me re the pro's and con's of these (If it even effects the NL) I'd appreciate it.
Many thanks in advance.

The NL had a DOHC 3.5 and the NM (2001 model) has SOHC. That's about the only difference in engines. Think the NL actually has a few more ponies but not much. The NL is a bit squeezier in the leg room dept.
The last of the line in the separate chassis models from Mitsi and a very refined vehicle (I'm NOT biased..... much;-)

The NL and NM both had the 3.5 SOHC motor. The NJ and NK model had the 3.5 DOHC . The NL is in my eyes the best of the series 2 Pajeros. You wont regret your purchase. Details of the NL series can be found here on the Paj

Also maybe have a look a the Jackaroo in the 3.5L V6, 1998 - 2003. Could probably pick up a later model than the Pajero for the same money.
Engine is excellent (can be thirsty) and chassis/body very sound.
Just another thought.

My wife's 2001 Jackeroo is not half the vehicle our 96Paj was. Not even remotely close in
suspension comfort and seating is less than adequate (for me) in the Jackeroo. BUT you are right regarding the purchase price with a later model being able to be bought in a Jackeroo compared to a Paj. My wife's Jackeroo was picked up for around 20 grand in late 2002 with 30 000km on the dial, try finding a Paj for that money LOL!!!
The 96 DOHC Pajero did have a bit more go than the SOHC Pajero's that come a bit later but it also used a bit more fuel also. Whatever model Pajero you all choose just make sure the timing belt is changed every 100 000km as these things will cause BIG repair bill if they break. I ended up loving the Pajero we owned, but it didn't start that way, it just proved itself time and time again until I couldn't argue about it.
Cheers, Trevor.

I think they use premium unleaded, and lots of it! also the stem valves wear out, meaning a lot of smoke or expesive repair, other than that a good car. have a look at the Pajero
forum.

I just purchased a 98 S.E. Jack 3.5 in very good condition with bbar tbar air spotties 10 stacker, 5 new tyres, 101000ks, all log books and
services carried out for $12500.
We also have a 3lt nh with 78000ks so are able to make an unbiased opinion.
Yes the seats and
suspension are better on the paj, with a much softer ride , positives for the jack arethe superb motor, better body intigirty, longer engine life if serviced and a power band that goes from ilde to 6ooorpm.
we also have a 4runner and a ra 3lt diesel rodeo in the household so it is interesting to compare the various models
