The Esplanade
I have got 285 x 16 ATR Coopers. And looking at gettting another x2 for a trip out west. Up to now all the driving has been on the blacktop By the sounds of things, Coopers have a problem of ripping lugs of and spiking side walls.
What are the other options then over the Coopers? I want a ATR style. I understand that Mickies come from the same company as Coopers.
85% of my time is on Black top. But looking at going to the Cape next year and Alice this year via the Plenty and returning through
Birdsville
Regards
A

Coopers are good blacktop tyres. They are also good in sand.

Hey Willem,, you are pretty dark on Coopers in the bush...
You should also say in your comments like this,,, that you are not happy with Coopers because when you drove across conditions like the surface of Mars you cut your sidewalls... hahahaha..lol...
I am not sure many tyres would have withstood that punishment...
Except for those backhoe tyres you run now...lol...

LOL yes...but I did put a post up to that effect last year sometime
My
young friend Andrew from Vivid Adventures has no issues with Coopers and has lots of display writing on his vehicles for them. When driving on 'Mars' the vehicle behind me on cheesecutter MTR's had as many punctures and the vehicle behind him on BFG's only had one. Ofcourse I had made a road by then being the person at the front of the queue...lol
I don't think any of the tubeless tyre brands would cut the mustard in 'Mars' country.

Hey Willem
Have you had a chance to
test out your MRF tyres yet in Mars country? I'm looking forward to hearing how they go as are probably the rest of this
forum.

Going to the Flinders tomorrow and will be going into some Mars country. I really want to
test them in dune country but not shure if that will happen this year.

Hi A - have you looked at the TOYO open country MT?
You may be surprised. Only marginally dearer than the Cooper STT, reasonably
well behaved on the bitumen, but outstanding offroad.
If you ask the question in a few months, I will be able to give a report on how they handle the GRR and Plenty.
Any tire can have a stake in the sidewall, but users seem to give these Toyo a v/good rating..............Keith.

I agree. Toyo Open Country are better than Coopers ATR. I could't believe how much the Coopers cut up on the
Oodnadatta Track. Large chunks about inch square out of the tread on all tyres. In fact we lost a new one (Spare) A complete ripout of the tread, after a
puncture. I had them rotated as per the warranty etc .
I since changed them at 30000ks In
Alice Springs to the Toyo Open Country ATR and are extremely happy.
Incidently I am towing a Australian Offroad Camper Cross Terrain which has Sumitomo ATR and they have no chips out of the treads and look like new.
I paid particular attention to Tyre pressures in accordance with the Manufactures reccommondations.
Coopers are a disappointment and I will not reccommend them to anybody.

I put Cooper STs on 3 yrs ago and didn't have a
puncture until two weeks ago. In that time I did several trips to the Centre, as
well as across the
Gary Junction Track and Kidson to 80 mile beach, and the
Gibb River Rd.
The first
puncture was a side wall tear which I was able to plug. I think it happened because I was towing a Landcruiser(500 Ks of gravel and dirt) with two snatch straps and he was trying to avoid my dust by driving to the side like a water skiier. This put a lot of sideways shear on my rear tyres.
I bought two brand new ST Cs for the back as the front were still good.
The second was a larger side wall rip on the
Connie Sue Hwy on one of the brand new ST Cs.
Might have just been unlucky.
So I'm sticking with Cooper ST Cs until there is a new miracle tyre.
I wouldn't recommend ST Cs for regular bitumen or town use, but they are OK for getting you to where you intend leaving the bitumen provided you are aware of handling and wet grip limitations.
