Howdy folks, was talking with a bloke in Mt Barker yesterday who has the above vehicle. Reckons it's the ducks guts. Goes
well, handles brilliantly, 10l/100km's and hassle free.
What are the impressions from owners on the 2000 turbo diesel auto's? What would be a realistic price for a schmicko ES (?) model would you reckon?
Any weak points I should look for? I'm after something a bit different and after 6 Cruisers and 1 Patrol I'm just sniffing around at the moment. I have been a vocal critic of them in the past so I am writing with a mouthful of my own words at the moment, but having grown up in a 2A I have a real soft spot for the marque (even if they were owned by the Bosch! at that stage)

I expect $14 trade in for my 2001 model with 225 km on the clock. Private sale should fetch more.

For a person buying , the big drop in price is good news . Compared to , say a Toyota , the buyer could purchase a used Disco and invest $20,000 in oil and energy shares or a managed trust , and the returns would have him driving on free petrol , and the money is available for emergencies , and the cost of the shares finishes up in his estate . I drive a Disco , and in the last 4 months each $20,000 I have in Colonial First State Global Rescources has earned me $5,000 . My investment also hedges me against future price rises .

Rotord, that's good.....no......excellent advice.
The 'bigger picture' is so often overlooked. Life of vehicle costs are what matters and more importantly - the 'opportunity cost' in economic terms of that expense.
Free fuel! You could legitimatley think of it in that way and it's not snake oil either.

i know the exact same vehicle in SA Mt Barker and is also for sale, i would dout the fuel consumption also under powered if u intend to tow

it is very critical that the timing belts are changed when recommended.

My 2001 TD5 auto climbs hills better than diesel cruisers with the same size van.
2nd point - they do not have timing belts. You don't know much about Discos do you???

maybe my uncles is not a 2001 but must be close and his does and unless u are comparing yours to a naturally aspirated Toyota i think u are having a lend a lend of yourself they have little torque and there power range is high in the rev range, they are a comfortable vehicle and with a lift quite capable off road but have very little load space

The TDi200 & TDi300s did have a timing belt. The Td5 has a solid drive - not rubber bands.
As for load space, they have 20% less than the series 80s, you have to learn to pack them vertically, they only have very little load space for those that do not have the nous to addapt their loading style.

Had a 2000 Td5 auto. Went very
well. For the first time in a dozen lease vehicles I replaced it after 3 years with another Td5. Unfortunately the D3 came out and it was too expensive/heavy/expensive to maintain and fewer & fewer dealers so went with a Pajero. I'm happier with the Paj than I was with the Discos - better use of space, nicer to drive on road and lots cheaper to service.
I was lucky with my two Discos. Very few small niggles. Unfortunately some of the horror stories you hear are true. A friend bought his 1999 Td5 a couple of months before me, missed out on the 3yr warranty and spent lots of time at the dealers at their expense and then at his own. Lost a lot on the trade.
You would hope that by now most tof the niggles have been sorted but the worry is if the bigger stuff is on the brink of going (or has gone and has been patched/warning lights disconnected for the sale).
The Auto is a better match to the engine than the manual (I tried the manual a few times to convince myself). As someone else suggested, AULRO is the place for specifics.
See if you can stretch to the update model (03ish) as a few things (brakes and steering in particular) were improved.

Redbook values a 2000 td5 ES at $20200-$24500.
I have a 2001 V8 petrol ES. Reliability has been excellent.
One of the standout features of the series 2 disco is the Active Cornering Enhancement. (ACE)... which the ES model has. It means tight handling at road speeds by eseentially stiffening up the swaybars hydraulically, but loosening up in low range to provide excellent articulation.
The ES model will have rear airbag
suspension, which frankly - is awesome. :) Nice smooth ride, and is self levelling - great for towing. Can also get a remote so you can raise and lower the rear end to make unloading easier or for hooking up to trailers.
One of the stupid things about the early model series 2 discos was the lack of centre difflock. Many aftermarket and factory options for this now, which will significantly improve offroad ability. (Centre difflock was introduced on the 2003 model disco - and the retrofit of this kit is the best option.)
Known issues include oil leaking to the ECU via the injector harness (which should have been fixed by a dealer by now if it had the problem). They can have front propshaft problems due to poor lubrication of the double cardan joint.. Some blokes are getting them fitted with a grease nipple or importing aftermarket jobs.
The td5 responds incredibly
well to aftermarket power chips and a larger intercooler. Will pull stronger than the petrol V8 after these mods. Most people are getting about 12-13l/100km around town with the auto.

Redbook values are fairyland values.
The real market is much lower.
The value of your car (or anything else for that matter) is what a buyer is prepared to pay.
Buyers of used 4WD antisocial gas guzzlers have a hard time re-selling them, hence much lower prices. If Redbook was a vehicle trader they'd be broke.

Mates one has had the Davis Performance Landys ECU upgrade and enlarged intercooler added. Makes 140kw and 480Nm of torque and goes like the clappers but works hard at all parts of the rev range and with such high figures I am interested in the longevity of the Td5.
It reguarly returns under 10l / 100 km on the highway but once in soft sand this will easily shoot over 16-17l. I guess to use that extra power you pay for it. He has the 2000 base model auto and it does have a fair share of body roll but with the ACE they are meant to be pretty good, though I have never actually driven one.
There have been no oil leaks on this certain one but his previous 1996 V8 leaked oil from both diffs, transfer case output and the sump oil seals. Water leaks on passengers side door and right little window in the top of the cargo area.
Just cross your fingers when you buy it. Even though I loath to say it he did snatch me out of the soft stuff at Teewah Beach entry last weekend. Freakin scottish tourists in a hire troopy drove straight at me after almost rolling it trying to stay OUT of the track onto
the beach. I was forced deep into the soft stuff with the mighty GU and almost made it but there was no way fatso was ever going to get out with the camper attached. Only needed a little snatch.........the 2.8's got power to burn!
