goodday all
well had the new codan ngt with autotune aerial installed last week and what a difference from the old unit
we went down to won wron near yarram on saturday and on the way home we called into alice springs base and had a great signal and voice clarity (about 2500ks)
and on sunday on the way back to melb we stopped near pakenham and had a convesation with charters towers base and althuogh not as good was still a reasonable copy
to say i am happy is an understaement as i didnt have to get out and change tappings and could scan all set channels including vks and radtel

Steve,
As a new comers to HF I'm interested in your comments as I have just mounted a multi tap. In the limited amount of use I have had, the skeds were not a prob with changing taps as most are on Ch 2 for VKS. Had not thought about scanning, may re think when we get back from the next trip.

Hello steve, most of the times we only listern to 8022, when you have it on scan the chances of picking up interferance on the other channels that not many people use is greatly increased and you loose the start of the conversation on 8022.

Scan is great for selcalls. 8033 isn't always the approipriate frequency, so beacon and selcalls are the go.
BTW 5455 is used at night on VKS
The 14 meg frequency is the go if trying to get long distances towards the middle of the day.
By choosing my frequencies I was able to keep tabs on a party on the CSR from the east coast.

The ability of the NGT to process and clean up signals is second to none in my experience.
Having listened on a side by side basis to various Barret's as well as earlier model Codans and the way they had struggled with signal clarity and then listened to the NGT its chalk and cheese.

The auto tune also allows you the ability to do so much more as Footy points out.
Mine scans constantly for Selcall's on all VKS freq plus I use Bcon for remote messaging and position fixing.

what will happen if i put a 400watt linear amp with my 8528. will it make it more clearer or will it just make 400 watts of static.

Hi Steve
Great news to hear as we are about to buy one. Where did you mount your aerial?. I'm hoping to mount mine at the rear, for vision sake, but mainly in case we collect some wildlife. If i can be cheeky, what did the whole lot cost?.
Cheers Lyndon & Bernadette

goodday lyndon
total cost $3575 was a show special ?? $3300 + $275 for installation and a couple of hours tuition on hf radio and how to use the ngt
i was going to install myself but it was worth the extra as it is now mounted under the drivers seat with a rear aerial I built the bracket myself and it bolts in behind the spare wheel bracket

Being a VKS737 Base Operator (Adelaide/Sunday) I make a lot of contacts with our Members that are out & about. I mostly give sig reports, and on occasions enquire as to the equipment being used.
In my opinion- a good tapped whip antenna will out perform an Autotune antenna. Maybe it's because of the 'loading' required in the Autotune to establish frequency resonance- where as a (good) tapped whip is not a compromise. And a tuned long wire or dipole give the best results.
Also, on some occasions- the old crystal controlled transceivers (such as the 7727) can outperform the newer synthesised units.
Some of these test have even been carried out on a side-by-side location.

Also, for anyone intending to fit HF radios- please use a HIGH VOLTAGE 20A fuse. Not the normal spade or glass fuse, even if rated at 12V 20A- these will not handle the rapidly varying current draw on transmit.

If you log in on Sunday Adelaide scheds- say G'day & mention ExplorOz
