Ok I'm in need of some help here.
Over
easter I discovered that our hotted up 12v stove re-heats
supermarket hot cross buns beatifully when camping.
Problem is
easter is over and I can't find any in
Melbourne.
Now I have done my research and phoned a couple of Baker's delights to no avail
and we hope to be bush again this weekend.
Consider simple
recipes even - remember I'm male

Don't laugh signman, Woollies sell a dark fruit cake which is the best fruit cake I have ever tasted! Not the square off-cuts like Big Sister and such but their own brand, a round one in a clear plastic container. At Xmas they just put white icing on it and call it Xmas cake. I always keep (weeks) some on hand for emergency's and have had people who don't like fruit cake change their minds after tasting it. It sure beats anything my old Irish grandmother used to make.
Robin, if you go to the
supermarket early in the morning, you will find plenty of everything in the
bakery dep't, the best stuff is usually gone by mid-day. If not ask the
bakery supervisor what days they 'bake' or get delivered.

Thats good point OzeSheila - I have since been told that some Bakers delights will do them for you based on a minimum quantity. This may work as we normally get some and freeze them. As most of our trips are overnight then they can be packed outside fridge and left to thaw out till needed.

Hi Steve
I'm currently just designing a state wide heavy industry communications
and control system - so that recipe is to complex for me - but I will pass
it on to my wife.
Thanks

Used to work at Coles. After
Easter, the Hot Cross Buns were sold as spicy fruit buns !
Same bag of mix, different label on the bag (also no X on the fruit buns !).
May be easier to find Spicy Fruit Buns during the year?

You might be lucky, have a look at your local supermarkets, you can often find them in the Reduced basket sometimes for less than $1 a packet (brand name too). They freeze very
well. Something to keep in mind next time around. We normally stock up on
Easter Buns, Crumpets etc when they're out cheap. Very edible for the budget consience.

Robin,
They are easy to make, follow any of the
recipes given.
A tip though, the recipe will say allow half an hour for dough to double in size, the key is doubling in size. This can take an hour or more if everything is cold - just don't panic. Also a "warm place" can be over a bath of hot water.
And "lukewarm" milk means just that - no more than 37 degrees or you will kill the yeast. I always allow about 3 hours from starting to having them on the table - plenty of time for a few beers !!

Sounds good Noel , but I'm generally out of my depth when doing much more than heating frozen ones in the Microwave - I mentioned
recipes to my wife , and she started talking about that new vegie patch I was going to do before the last trip !

Why not Mothers' Day buns. DON'T TELL THE SUPERMARKETS. I did mention in one store, just after New Year that I believed that their hot cross buns would be past their use by date by
easter???????????

My local Safeway (Karingal - Frankston) was selling hc buns as of last week - maybe buy a heap and freeze for future use. - though of course you can just buy old fashioned yeast buns and use them the same way - they are alwasy available in most bakers I've found.
