Hi all just thought i would give you an update on my little situation with my 1hz motor ticking in the crankshaft, I was first told that it was crank shaft flex.
Crankshaft flex it is, because it is cracked!!!! Looks like my dealer is finaly going to come to the party and cough up the 6 grand to fix it as part of my 3 month statutory warranty, With a lot of percistance from myself, I have been told by an ex toyota tech that this is very common and caused by dropping it back in the gears to early.
So hopefully all goes well and this major headache will soon be over.

Broken crank shafts in 100 Series toyota's eh..........Glad I got a three litre patrol instead and kept the extra 23 grand in my pocket ....... I could upgrade to a new one in a while and still have money left over.

(Put's on the flack jacket to sheild the obscenities flying back from this reply) lol :)

Aaron,
Glad to see that the cause has been found and the road to recovery is in the works, It's a shame though that you had to put pressure on the dealership to bring this to a head. Personally I have seen this time and time again regardless of the manufacturer. Why do we have to demand action on a warranty item? After sales service and warranty just doesn't cut it !
Vehicle manufacturers should police their service franchises to respond to warranty issues with a posive attitude, Although I think franchise conditions with most manufacturers are of the situation that the manufacturer will cover cost of part and materials and any labour cost are to be absorbed by the franchisee.
This is not always the case , but is becoming more common in the industry and does not help the consumer at all.

Hope everything goes well,
Leon

Hi Aaron,

If you don't mind can you explain what you mean by dropping back in the gears too early? High reving when down gearing?

I would have thought pulling away in too high a gear would put a lot more strain on the engine and drivetrain - judge by the feedback I get from the engine when I am not paying attention and do this etc.

Sometime I just go away form this forum worried.

Hi Dustin.

Dropping back in gears that are to low for the speed that you are travleing at is the apparent cause, putting it into 2nd gear and travleing at say 60 ks and then dropping the clutch would put enormous strain on the crank when the motor is sitting on idle and then ripping it up to 3000 rpm. This is a common problem with the 1hz diesel motor when miss treated, so i have been told, I brought this car second hand so it wasnt me.

hi aaron
i brought 80 series new and the ticking noise started about 10000 ks and i did not overrev the engine on down shift
i was told it was c/s flex also i finally got mine replaced 80000 ks as it got worse.
i think they tell you anything depend on dealer.
you should not have any more flex now.
cheers reggy 2

Thats great i am pretty conferdant that it will go when they replace it. Its very noisy. What a cop out though crankshaft flex, "It will be ok just keep driving it and turn the radio up" they told me. I am very glad i pushed so hard to get something done.
I will let you all know how it goes once they have replaced it. Cheers

It happens pritty much all the time as long as you are on the accelerator, it dosnt do it when im of the eccelerator. and you can here it at idle to once motor is warm.

How was it determined that the fault lay in your crankshaft? Did they take it out to inspect it or what?

I have a ticking noise in my 1HZ 80 series and have always put it down to the thrust bearing. I have had the crankshaft bearing journals inspected with no bad news but have not heard about your problem. Not that that means anything of course. The issue doesn't seem to crack a mention on Cruiser Owners Online.

Can you expand on your experiences with this problem?
I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy
