I am interested in adding a gas system to my Nissan Patrol 3ltr turbo diesel. Does anyone have any experience and
feedback about this. I was wondering if the turbo is able to cope with the extra heat, which would be generated. Thanks for your help.

Don't think anyone is game. It would void the warranty

Somebody (either on this
forum or the Patrol
forum) has already done this mod. I think you'll find it actually LOWERS the EGT.

Giggi, good timing of your question. Where are you?
I'm in WA and am about to have my 2005 GU series IV 3L fitted with the Diesel Gas Australia system at
United Fuel Injection (in two weeks).
I have also been lead to believe that pre-turbo exhaust temp can be lower if the gas injection rate is set at a sensibly low level. To give reasonable power increase and better efficiency. However I have heard several cases of getting big power figures at the risk of raising exhaust temp above safe levels.
Has anyone on the
forum actually had their 4x4 fitted with a Diesel Gas Australia system.
I have seen the system fitted to several other vehicles a Discovery td5 and Cruiser 100 series GXL 4.2TD but really want to see it on another GU Patrol to find out if there are any specific issues regarding exhaust modifications and other fitting issues.
I am also interested if other GU owners have fitted an Exhaust gas temp gauge or boost gauge.
I will post details of how it goes after fitting and will get it on the dyno before and after to see the difference.

Giggi,
We had our 2004 3ltr Patrol fitted with "diesel-gas" in Feb this year. I cannot speak highly enough out the system. Gained over 25kw of extra power with a set-up that is mid range between power and economy. The power is instant when you put your foot down and it takes a bit of getting used to as it is not like driving a diesel at all. My biggest problem is now trying to get the wife out of the drivers
seat and to stop driving my car!
We do lots of towing with a camper trailer and now have less of the auto dropping down a gears. As far as cooling goes, there is no problem as it seems to run cooler with the gas. Fuel economy is great and getting about an extra 200kms from the tank. My Nissan dealer has had no bad reports about the gas fitted to several Patrols and Navara's coming through the branch and have been told there is no problem with the warranty. Got $3000 back from the gov. for the conversion so only cost $1000. Best thing the little Johnny has done!
I wish you all the best in your quest.
Regards,
Chris Harvey

would it be possible for you to post a few pics of where and how the tank is mounted and how low it hangs etc?

Leroy,
The main muffler on the left hand side gets removed and the 30ltr approx tank gets installed there. The exhaust system gets re-routed. It does not hang any lower than any other part of the car and it has a stone gaurd over it for protection. Dont have any pics of it. Hope that helps.

no worries, thanks for that. It's difficult to know what to do. I still have 3yrs of warranty left and wouldn't want to have to make a warranty claim and have Nissan throw it back in your face even though it hasn't contributed to the prob. Nissan already have a poor track record in settling warranty claims!!

Leroy,
Just took my car back for a service last month and signed up for the extended 3 year warranty with gas fitted. Had the Manager ok it before I spent the $$$.

Hi Chris,
glad to hear you are happy with the system, where did you have it fitted.
Mine goes in for fitting on Friday. I gather you are in WA as you got the full $3000 rebate.
I am also fitting a boost gauge and exhaust gas temp pyrometer to keep an eye on things. Have not worked out where to mount the gauges yet.

G'day Giggi,
We did a GU 3Ltr Turbo 5spd. Gained 30% in fuel economy & 40% at the rear wheels.
36ltrs usable tank under the belly with an exhaust mod. Filler in the standard filler hatch.
Completely different vehicle to drive with the gas switched on.

What would one do with their DTronic if they got this conversion done?

Leroy,
I have been told that you can still run the D tronic or other chip without any change. The gas and it's control system will not interfere with the chip and vica-versa.
Dallas,
I am interested in the filler location as my Patrol has the two filler caps inside the flap (one for main and one for the sub tank) there did not seem like enough room for the gas filler. The systems I have seen fitted in WA had the filler on the side of the towbar (with a welded on bracket and bash guard). Which did not seem that great a location to me. Much more professional if it will fit under the fuel flap.
Do you have a photo to post of the location on a GU Patrol.
Cheers

G'day Geordie4x4,
You're spot on with what you said about still being able to run the D tronic with a diesel lpg conversion. The lpg simply improves the burn of whatever is being injected so we are still achieving an increase in efficiency. Admittedly there may not be the same gains as a std vehicle as the fuel curve has altered & may not offer as much room for improvement but you can still do them.
With regards to fitting the filler in the filler hatch with your GU, it's easy to be completely honest. I know when you look at it you think not a hope in hell (i know thats what my 1st thought was) but it's just a matter of utilizing filler valves which may have been intended for another vehicle but lend themselves to the space available. It actually came out a really nice, tidy, spacous fit believe it or not. I'll try & get those pics for you. I'll keep in touch
Regards

Thanks Dallas,
Pity I am over in WA or I would come and get you to do it.
I had thought that I might get a Landcruiser filler from the wreckers (as it has two in one) and fit both diesel tanks to one filler and make space for the gas filler to be fitted above.
Cheers

Dallas,
thanks that is great, I will keep an eye on your website. It is good to find the diesel/gas idea has come a long way in the last few years and things are being done neatly and professionally.
Cheers

Hey Giggi,
Sorry mate, i just realised i didn't actually address your concerns mate.
The beauty of doing the lpg conversions on the diesels is that the diesel fuel is basically completely burnt while it's still in the cylinder instead of it continueing to burn as it goes out through the exhaust prots accross the trubo etc & warming your exhaust pipe for you. This means that yes you get energy that you weren't getting before because we're burning more of that diesel portion> Also mate, it actually reduces the temp's at the turbo because you are only having exhaust GASSES pass over it now instead of an actual flame front of burning diesel so trubo longevity is improved. PLUS because lpg is a controlled & stable flame front, the Diesel KNOCK is reduced in a big way, reducing the hammer effect on engine internals. All round mate, putting gas onto the diesels increases the engine life as long as it's done
well of course.
Regards
Dallas Green
