I have a 1990 Import jackaroo,I brougth it a 116,000 km,s and did,ent miss a beat for 50,000 km,s (I live in the NT and have been all over it,In some pretty rougth terrain,I just got back from Perth 8,000 RTN .About 100 km,s out of Katherine I blew the gearbox up (5th & reverse gear) I got towed in by one of the bush machinics (the tv show) nice block, driving an old toyata suff,I was also towing a camper trailer about 1000kg weight. I was told by a number of Machices that you should only tow in 4th gear,as 5th is realy only a ouerdrive,a 4wd place up here at Darwin replaces 12 -14 gearboxes a year from the grey nomades,(doesent matter if it,s toyota, nissian etc) I have never read this info in all the years I have been reading 4WD Mags,If I knew this before it would have saved me $2500,in repairs.Have you heard this or read it?

It has been talked about quite a bit here and I don't know if it happens, for me, I own an Isuzu MU import would be the same box as yours, I have not had any problems so far and use 5th gear all the time expect under 2000rpms when towing our camper trailer. Doing 100 kph in 4th gear would be reving the s..t out of it and would not last to long as well.
Now have you checked to make sure it has not lost oil, these boxs have a habit of leaking oil, mine is at the moment, thru the the gaskets. Also try our club site for more info www.clubisuzu.com
Cheers Bruce.

Yep....5th gear is an overdrive gear and is not strong enough for constant towing. Many people have been caught this way.

I tow a trailer which weighs in at 800kg maximum weight (I carry spare fuel) and will tow in 5th on long straight stretches but drop down to 4th as soon the speed drops under 80kmh.

I've just spoken to some gearbox specialists in Adelaide re my '97 Triton gearbox - I tow a heavy boat with it. I have a lot of confidence in these guys - they did a pre-purchase inspection before I bought it some years ago.

The principal said that using 5th when towing a heavy load does impose very large loads on the associated bearing and he recomended only driving in 4th when I've got the boat on the back.

There is truth in this assertion it seems.

Happy days

George
