Hi all, Just wondering has anybody got or has had one, a UHF GME but the 5 watt hand held units and what they think of them. I left the old uhf in the hilux, so in the process of getting one for the prado. I like the fact you can take it out of the cradle when
parking in city (or around
home shopping centre etc) so no little light fingers will break in and want to flog it as they do even with hard wired ones that are permanatly mounted. They can be put in a cradle on the dash like a mobile phone and also connect up to an external arial for better range etc. Are they any good or better off with one like I had in the dash of the hilux permanantly mounted. Regards Steve M

have used them alot for work. Reception isnt as good without the external arial. They are a bullet proof unit survivng in a dusty environment and getting dropped onto the rocks often and getting swung around by the mic cable. Battery life is at least 12 hours of continous use

Steve,
I have the old version of the GME hand held we use when on trips.
The X Trail doesn't have on fitted so we use the hand held when travelling.
I haven't used the vehicle mounting kit but intend to get it for the X Trail. As an temperary measure we bought the higher gain aerial, it is about 30cm long and it has improved the range by about 1-2 km.
Cheers Kev

Hello Stephen, if getting it stolen is your only concern why dont you do what we did and mount it in the storage area under the arm rest in the centre consol.
Or you could mount it in the clove box as the TX3400 had a remote head and mount the rest away be hind the dash out of site.
The last thing I would want to do is carry a large radio around with me when out of the vehicle.
A vehicle mounted radio is always going to be better then a hand held in the way of performance, easy of opetation and conveniance.
Why not be careful where you park your Prado, I would be more concerned about getting other gears stolen before a radio was.
We have never had anything stolen whilst we are away....but then again we watch were we park.
Regards Richard

Hi Stephen
Got one for my 04 prado a couple of weeks ago.
Put a 9db aerial on the bull bar but had a real time fitting it threw the fire wall had to pull fair part of the passenger side dash apart and popped the big rubber plug to get to the little plug above it!
All in all very neat fit after 3 hrs work!
Apart from that, I've been informed that they are the same as the hard wired ones and so far its seems pretty good.
Use the three hour fast charger with a gme cigarette lighter fitting, cost $14 works a treat.

Yeh Yeh same old stuff , I hear all the time from owners of this and that , Yes it will work fine, it won't let you down , it will work faultless , of course it will , I know that, A uniden will last as long as a GME , maybe longer, What I DO know and by experience of being out on the road and DO talk to and make radio contact with every Truck and some 4x4s heading the oposite direction for 1000s of Klms is that when I encounter a Uniden the incoming transmission is 95% always distorted , I said to a Truckie 2 weeks back , Geez mate your Uniden sounds crappy, he came back with, ....How the bloody hell did you know it was a Uniden, Haa I didn't tell him how bad he sounded, so you blokes who think it works OK , take notice of what you hear, and you can't hear yourself ,

Each to his own Doug. It's like Ford and Holden, Toyota and Nissan. I've sold Uniden for years. Had them in my vehicles. Swapped them from vehicle to vehicle. Done all the instals myself. The conclusion I've come to is that any poor transmission or reception problems, regardless of the brand, is usually down to poor installation/soldering at either end of the antenna cable.
Anyway, I started a post on HF radios. Can you jump onto that one and give me a full and frank appraisal of your HF gear? Cheers.

poor installation/soldering eh. then explain to me as I just finished telling you , why is it always a Uniden I never get these results from GMEs and Icoms, And really I don't care what you sell or how many you have installed it's the same old story I get out on the road , and your going to tell me it's only Unidens that have been installed incorrectly , WHY DON'T I GET distorted GMEs , mate I ask the driver what it is , I do my tests out in field , I know what I hear , I know what I'm told , and I'm telling you Unidens are transmitting distorted , the users can't hear it, I can along with fellow travellers, so it's not my radio or all incomings would be distorted , just admit it mate , Unidens are CRAP ,

well may your personal experience say otherwise, and No one will save
the Governor General, How many times a week do you talk to other users, your like a footy barracker , 1 eyed , All I do is inform another forumite of of my experiences about products I use and come into contact with, If they decide not to listen then so be it , And my experience from the coal face ie the highways of Australia is I believe more accurate than someone who hangs about a
shop installing radios that pi$$ me off when I hear everyone saying aye ....whadya say all the bloody time because the bloke sounds like he's trying to talk through a mouth full of damn pubic hair,.....end of story

Hey Doug owning a GME or Icom is a bit like owning a Toyota....you don't have to say how good it is because everyone Knows.
Owning a Uniden is like owning a Nissan every one knows how bad it is but you have to keep justify why you brought it!
LOL
