rather than buy a cheap generator and the jaycar charger, is there a device that improves the alternators charging abilities and maybe provides a line-out to charge a battery-pack while running 350 watt device from a inverter at the same time.

Search in marine electronics there is a device used in stead of the normal regular so the alternator keeps charging at near full voltage until battery is fully charged. Just cannot think what they are called at the moment. We built a manual over ride in one of my yachts, but that is a bit risk in a vehicle thought.
Cheers Bruce.

Yes there is a smart 3 stage alternator regulator but whether it has a second line out to charge a battery pack is unknown.

It is from a reputable company (Xantrex) but I have rarely seen them for sale in Australia.

I must be missing something...
so then the standard practice must be to buy the cheap gen & chgr...
is running your engine that much worse from the expense & other stuff from running a generator...
or does 2-3 hours of the he above "fully" charge your batteries better than a 1 hour engine idle
i only have a small 24v fridge that is off at night and a 1 hour per desktop pc

The Unipower gear is good. Had one in my GQ. The biggest problem was that when the alternator died it had to be sent to WA for repair. The postage was a killer.
The Unipoweer in my truck had done heaps of work before it died.

Usual method is to bump output of alternator up a little RBT
Don't know your car.
1/ Many have manual throttle to set revs about 1200
2/ Another way to to provide switchable altternator volts output via series doide in field circuit which leaves idle speed same.
3/ Often series resitor on temp sender - makes ECU keep car revs up thinking engine is cold.
4/ Me - I redesigned my cruise control to provide manual engine speed overide.
Gives me bulk power for running winch or 1500 watt inverter - as only use single
battery here.
5/ Two 15 to 20 minute periods a day is usually a good way to go and this is a very effective method of replacing batts charge and a lot less of a hassle/expense than most gennies.

so it will charge while we shower, beaudy everything is fine
i shouldnt put that cheap charger on my batteries cause it will cake them up...
atm i get three days from the fridge turning it off at night and then one day (beer-day) if i do a water run about 25mins in it .. so that must be ok
i've got a sirius L300 4x4. I realise some of the benefits of keeping the batteries fully charged. I am going to presume an alternator isnt a three-stage charger.
I may now consider a smart charger/battery controller or batt pack (Zantrax) and assuming everything fine, the next step to replace the batts with gels... eventually ill get to a gennie but a quality quiet one..

rbt,
What's the 'perceived' benefit of "the next step to replace the batts with gels" ? ? ?

yes yes, i am examining my reasons...normally i wouldnt spend the money..
they discharge lower... and they are stronger build... significant for me
and that now i realise i have been ruining my wet-cell with a bad chargers, i wouldnt mind getting good batteries and keeping them for thier lifetime to make up for the others ruined...
