What would be a good cruising speed for a TD42? Mine is a 4 speed manual (yes they exist in the earlier gqs here) and i was wondering what would be a good cruising speed for it? i had a 5 speed in my old mk ute (which had a much higher axle ratio) and 4 speed seemed ok for most conditions and it cruised ok at 55mph to 60 in 5th speed (although a little more taxed after the change from 32s to 31s)

Lawrence, what sort of revs are you doing at 60mph?

I am not sure, as it does not have a rev counter.

Lawrence

Mph? Where are you?

I had a SD33 Nissan and used to drive it flat out when living in the Northern Territory and that speed was only 120kmh. It was a 4speed beast too.

I would say that 95-100kmh= 55-60mph would do for a 4th gear cruising speed.

Cheers

Gday Lawrence
If Jamaca is like FIJI or TONGA don't drive fast or you will run off the end of the island.

Jamaica is around 16o miles from one end to the other, with major highways around the island. More than half of the island is mountain with plenty areas for fourwheeling especially Blue Mountain

Lawrence, if you were in Australia 100 kph would be a good cruising speed but as you are in Jamaica 160 to 180 is fine He He He!

I have found that most manufacturers aim the drivability to be best at around 80kph.. (50mph for Lawrence :) ) i.e. motor not working too hard and getting good economy.

Each car is different though and there is nothing to say that your diff gear ratios haven't been played with etc.. even your tyre size will play a big role in the cruise speed of your car.

I would say it would come down to what you are comfortable driving at.. if the economy is best at 80kph but you never drive at less than 100kph (63mph) then there is no point is saying that 80 is the best cruise speed as you wil not drive there anyway..

listen to the revs and you can generally tell when the motor is working too hard.. the best cruise speed is a combination of when the motor is humming along nicely, the diff whine is bearable, the tyre noise is not drowning out the stereo, and the car handles well enough to be considered safe.... if all these factors are ok and the fuel economy is good then I would say THAT is your best cruise speed!

I reckon is sounds pretty good where you are Lawrence!!!! Geez 160mile from end to end though... that is not even a morning drive for us! sounds like you have some great off roading around you though..
