Vista, and how things should'nt be done

To those contemplating a PC or Lap Top upgrade with Microsoft Vista as the operating system. Be aware:

Some manufacturers don't allow multiple operating systems, such as Vista/XP. This can be overcome by down loading Microsoft Virtual PC via the web (free).

Many gadgets using USB port connectivity don't currently work with Vista (nearly pulled my hair out on this one).

In some instances, if you remove Vista you'll completely loose your operating system and be at the mercy of the manufacturer.

The same principle applies to 'add on' software. Have a close look at the box to ensure its Vista compatible. If not, download Virtual PC.

Hopes this helps those stuck in a virtual World!

Regards

Kim

I recently bought a new Dell laptop with Windows Vista Business. Having migrated from Commodore 64 through most of Windows releases, I am totally impressed with the perfomrance, compatability and general user friednliness of Vista. If there's a problem, Vista tells you and then goes off to try and locate a solution. eg. today whilst installing Nero V6 computer advised that if I proceeded then I could expect incompatability problems. Solution suggested, check Nero web site for a more recent release. Did so, found that they now had V7 which was docmented as being Vista ready. How hard was that?

Part of the problems people are having may be related to inappropriate syatem configuration (Vista is pretty particular), trying to use old and completely unsuitable software, not enough RAM (Vista loves RAM), general lack of skill and sufficient computer ability/skill to understand the processes and procedures. Things go wrong and it's always someone or something elses fault. Happens all the time.

Have to agree with you. My son bought a new lappy with Vista, much to my horror, as I end up fixing all puter probs of his and SWMBO's machine (XP). And my own (XP) of course.
He is a heavy user of graphics and music etc , as in making and editing.
He loves Vista, while all I can see are the compat problems. I think he also uses the Virtual Windows.

"general lack of skill and sufficient computer ability/skill to understand the processes and procedures"

New operating systems should be user friendly and not have a need for the the above statement...............

Bought a new laptop yesterday with Vista Premium onboard.
It is a bit different but i have installed my Office 2003, Soundforge 8, AVG and other software on there with no problems yet. It is early days though.

DIO i would be more worried about buying a DELL than Vista. Been there done that and never again will those mongrels get my bucks....

I have it on mine Steve, and it seems to go pretty well with the exception of some of the products like Office 2000 so I use the free one instead. Beauty has been it connected to wireless as soon as I got used to the software better than I could with XP.....

I hate Vista. looks nice, but...
My old laptop, running XP (which BTW has a graphics card problem which will need repair) has a less powerful CPU and less RAM yet is much faster than my u-beaut new laptop, which is more powerful and twice the RAM.... and is slooowww.
In fact, before I uninstalled Norton (which came pre-installed) it was almost unusable! (What a disgraceful piece of crap that is!)
1/10 Microsoft!

I've learnt my lesson (slow learner!)
Next laptop will be an Apple, though that'll have to be a few years away.
