The front disc pad on the GQ fell out while off road 2 weeks ago leaving me in a dangerous situation.I had no pedal brakes at all !It was the front passenger outer pad that went walkies. We made it back to the
camp using the hand brake and then went back in a friend's patrol to search (and found) the pad.Should of bought a lotto ticket.
The question on my mind is has this happened before? My pads were just ok on the wear limit recommended by Nissan so why should a pad be able to fall out? A bad design fault? I spoke to a person a the local dealers and he said this could only happen if the wheel bearings were shot. Not the case on my GQ I had only minimal play in the hub.So be aware that this can happen and could end in a fatality .I sure will be replacing my pads
well before Nissan's recommended thickness limit.
Once bitten twice shy.

Hey Nifty,
When I was an apprentice I saw a few patrols come in with the same problem and my step father and one of his good friends also had Patrols. Both of thiers did it too so it was something I came to expect from these vehicles.
The problem is there are 2 shims (One for anti squeel and one for spacing) behind the brake pads. This gives at least another 2 mm behind each pad thus 4mm to hold the pads in position. And after many years alot of people including mechanics tend to either discard them, maybe the locating lugs fall off, Lose them or simply forget to put them back in hence throwing them over the left shoulder.
This was always a problem and now since I own a nissan, once they have your money they really don't care3. This is why I have decided to use this one as a tonka for the next 4 months before i take delivery of my new cruiser :)

Nifty
you are right track problem is to do with thickness of pads steel back thickness & shape of backing plate.Removing anti rattle shims has nothing to do with it.
