Seeing as though a couple of posts were about Emails tonight here is a sure way to save and back up all your email addresses from the Outlook Express address book , first go to your C:/ drive and make a NEW FOLDER name it address book back up or what ever you like, so there you have a totally empty folder, Now open Outlook Express and go to your book and open it and go to the top of the page and click on EDIT then SELECT ALL , all the entries should now be highlited, copy and paste them into the empty folder, so in future if you loose them they can be copied back into the book,

Do not close the address book until you have pasted into the folder

That will save each entry in the address book as a VCard file, which for some people could be a lot of files. Another way to do it is to backup the actual address book file/s, which saves the whole address book as the one file.

If you open the Address Book from within Outlook Express, click on File -> Export -> Address Book (WAB), select the backup directory and provide it with a file name, it will backup the entire address book as one file.

I also tried it when the panel comes up about being the default , I clicked yes on the 2nd test , open it up and still it's empty , if you save it as business card (vcard) then it works but only the same results as the way i said first up,MYTH BUSTED

Just did the same thing as what I said above. When I open the saved (exported) address book, it defaults to the "shared contacts" option, which almost certainly is blank. Try it again and click (on the left hand side) on 'main identity's contacts' and you'll see that all the addresses are there. MYTH NOT BUSTED - no need to be rude about it because it didn't work straight up for you, just trying to put forward alternative solutions as some people may find that alternative methods may be easier. This method *does* work, mark my words, do it all the time for clients.

For what it's worth, the best way to import this sort of file is to open up Outlook Express, and choose 'File -> Import -> Address Book', point to the file and follow the prompts.

Thank you 'main identity's contacts' I did not click
I am sorry, I was wrong. like John Laws I am not beyond admitting when wrong , so really both ways are ok as long as the files are backed up , does it really matter what is quikest

No worries mate - didn't mean my MYTH NOT BUSTED thing as an attack on you... bad day at work and probably took everything the wrong way. All is well now though, I'm home with a coldie ready to watch QLD flog NSW in the State of Origin.

Both options will work and probably both are as quick as each other, but my preference is to have the one file for the backup. Still at least people can make up their own mind which way to go (there's half a dozen more ways this could be done, too!). Like you said, all that matters is the important stuff is backed up! :)

Don't you do back ups,

Here I sit looking at all these excuses and what to do and how when and why and when i do think I'll give his way a test it don't work , I think by now after stuffing around with PCs since 1997 , built my own starting with an empty mini tower back in 2002, now turn 64 next month and some these younger blokes haven't got the faintest idea , it amazes me, it really does

The best way to save your contacts in Outlook Express is to use Outlook (full version) and regularly back up your PST file ;-)

Too many years in this game fixing other peoples problems.......I NEVER recommend Outlook Express. I always recommend full Outlook if you have Microsoft Office, or Thunderbird if you don't.

I have this problem.
Using O.E I was invited to compress my files.
During compression something happened I don't know what but the compression stopped.
At the end my Inbox was empty , whereas it had several emails I was to respond to.

Since then I went into a folder where a number of emails were stored and it too is empty.
Don't know if this had anything to do with it but during a test by AVG it said I had been infected with Win32/Heur and the file concerned was "...setup.exe"
Anyone had this happen and where do I look for them.

Yeh I had that happen once too, It still does it even on this new computer so it's not a throw back from the old one and it works ok , what has happened is that the files have been compressed as stated and to retrieve them it will direct you to Microsoft to download some file that will enable to read them , basicly I wouldn't bother, I don't think it really natters what programm you use somewhere sometime there will be a gliche in the system, thats why when dealing with Non Humans ie Computers do the Backup as I first explained , it does work that way , oh and here is another little bit of help , put cursor up top of Outlook where all the icons are, 1 right click / Customise / and in the popup panel add the little Floppy icon to the row, handy and fast way of saving all emails to a folder or flash drive .
