How many people use a thimble at the end of the winch cable. I have had this discussion recently and I believe everyone should use it. Though the winch manufacturers don't always supply one doesn't mean it's safe.

Hi Skippy,
What do you mean by a thimble ?
The end of my cable has a hook.

Its a thingy that goes into the eye of the spliced cable end and protects the inner edge from chafing and flattening

Thanks.
Mine is OK then.
The only other concern I have is with the hook. Are you better with a shackle or a hook ?

I prefer a Shackle but make sure it's a load rated one and not an el cheapo with no SWL marked on it. I must say I used a hook for years and had no problems.

Assume you're talking about using a thimble/shackle combination as with the hook supplied with most
winches there isn't room for one.

No i can't! I recently enrolled with photobucket.com to be able to do this, but following the instructions failed to get the photo to appear - but some else re-typed the link at did it for me. There must be a super secret something else in the process.

Thanks Skippy - a very informative site.
I still love you ice cream van picture. I have 'borrowed' it to sent to my daughter who will be driving an ice cream van in the
Pilbara shortly.
