This is a follow up to a previous post that I submitted regarding my 105 series 1hz with a inconsistent ticking noise coming from the motor. I thought that i was finally going to get the crank replaced after 2 1/2 months of disputes with my local dealer and Toyota Australia. But no I had 2 Toyota techs from melbourne come down and confirm the noise to be Crankshaft flex which was the original diagnosis from my dealer, Any way at the end of the day Toyota acknowledge this problem and say. And I qoute "There is no concern that a failure would occur from the crankshaft. Replacement of parts is not expected to eliminate the noise". My dealer told me that toyota have changed a lot of cranks and the noise just comes back after 10 or 20 000 kms from what I can understand it is the actual block that is out of wack which causes the crank to flex in turn making this noise. Lovely on Toyota's behalf its an absolute disgrace.

Every time I hear a ticking noise from now on I will remember your thread and think what a bunch of explicits they are at toyota. Its enough never to buy another one. I would go nuts listening to that ticking; like a time bomb.

Nothing new about crankshaft flex. It was a feature of the 1995/96 1HD-FT motors, and cranks were replaced back then without an improvement. Didn't affect longevity, so people forgot about it. You've logged the problem, thats all you can do.

My FJ55 LC had a lovely gudgeon noise when idling. CLUNK...CLUNK...CLUNK...CLUNK

I bought the old dear with 285,000 on the clock and it rusted away on me at 550,000. Rebuilt the engine at 380,000 and for a while the engine idled quietly but then after a while the familiar CLUNK....CLUNK....CLUNK came back.....LOL

Cheers

Cheers Steve.

Mate its the old story!, the bigger you are the more you get away with.

Massed produced items, poor quality control, but we sell more than the others world wide, so who gives a chit!!. Hope all works out.

Cheers Axle.

I have a faint ticking noise in my 1HZ in my 95 75 series. It comes on about 1800 and goes away about 2200 when warm. No noise when cold.
I had the valves adjusted and the BEB replaced to make sure and no differnce .Is this the same symptoms as everyone else?

this might sound silly but when you add accessories/ change stuff under the bonnet it deflects the sound differently back into the cab and makes you here noises louder or in a different tone or noises that you couldnt hear before.

If i put my head under the side of the car and rev the throttle with my hand you can not miss this noise it comes directly out of the sump.

I wrote to you a few months back when you first mentioned it. My 2004 TD Troopy has the same noise, appeared at about 20,000km. Told the same by dealer in Adelaide, crankshaft flex tick tick tick.

Out of interest, Lyndon, I have the same motor as you, and had the odd tick tick sound when I bought it at 70-80,000k, but it has since gone away, and the vehicle has never sounded better. The only things I've done since then is inactivate the EGR and its had the valve clearances readjusted. Using same oil etc, and I usually use the Chemtech fuel additive.

My '91 1HZ ticked from the day I bought it with 130K until the day I sold it (10 years later) at 280K without missing a beat. Noticable at idle and again around 1800rpm

If your block is at fault according to Toyota I would be insisting that they remove and strip the motor and get the main bearing caps and block line bored so as to true it up. They may say that there is not a problem of crankshaft failure, but what about premature failure of the main bearings? This could happen 1,2,3, hundred thousand km`s from now and they will be not so forthcoming re the fault being their problem. Get any admission they make in writing, also consult your local RAC/ NRMA and get their opinion as well. Don`t accept Toyota`s brush off. Your motor is substandard and Toyota should rectify the fault. Good luck! Regards G.T.
