Hi All,

In late Sept I will be dragging the tribe (wife & 2 kids 3 and 7) up to Karratha to visit friends. On the way up we would like to stay somewhere near Coral Bay for a few days. We have done the caravan park thing in the past up there but are looking for something a bit different. We will be towing a Jayco off-road camper trailer so we are pretty much self sufficient.

The most important thing is that we stay somewhere with sheltered waters for the kids to swim in so they don't have to worry about getting dumped by waves.

I have looked at the website for Gnaraloo and it looks like it may fit the bill as 3 Mile Lagoon offers a safe swimming environment. Has anyone been there that can comment?

Towards the end of Sept does it get very windy?

Any suggestions for other places we could stay at up that way?

Thanks in Advance

Try Ningaloo Station, 50 k north of Coral Bay via good fun track or the highway Great spots for the kids and at about $5.00 per night you cant go wrong. Winds between April and August usually a gentle breeze, Sept probably the same You can camp metres from the water and if you have a tinnie the reef is awesome.

Any of those camping spots along the coast in Cape Range NP are usually very good. We spent time at 'Tulki' in 2002 and it was great.

Ningaloo station is great. Winds can be a drama but you can phone ahead and Graham will glady help out with that sorta info.

We camped at South lefroy bay at easter and over 8 days we had 2 and a half that were pretty much blown out but the rest was magical. North Lefroy bay is a nicer beach and hardly have to air down to get in but it gets very crowded and absolutely no protection from the wind.

If you want to stay away from the crowd and get some wind cover then go to south lefroy, try and get site #1 or 2? (it's like a culdesac). Really nice spot, sand is pretty soft so all tyres down and walk in to check it out beforehand.

I live locally and Sept is normally the start of the windy season, best to camp somewhere out of the wind. Camping fees at Ningaloo Station are $2.50 per adult, Winderabandi is a good place to camp if you want to get a safe place from the wind, also South Lefroy Bay is another good spot to get out of the wind. Make sure you air down (18-20psi)because of the popularity of the place these days the tracks get churned up very easily. As for the shark attack the other day at Warroora Station I would quess that it was caused by human stupidty.

Cheers

gnaraloo has good safe swimming right in front of campground and great swimming at gnaraloo bay. its a sancturary.

our windsurfing/kitesurfing rule of thumb for gnaraloo is - theres a 50% chance of a seabreeze above 20 kts in september.

have fun
