pajero 2.8TD and gearbox reliability?

For some reason I haven't been able to register on the pajero club site so thought I'd fish for a pajero expert here. I've heard that the 2.8TD in pajeros has been known (presumably on rare occasions, and possibly due to lack of maintenance) to suck engine oil out of the sump thereby seizing the motor. One report indicated that this was just a NJ (93-96) problem, but I'm wondering if there have actually been any changes made to this motor during its 93-02 model run?
I'm also curious about the canter gearbox reliability. Being out of a light truck, I would've thought it would be good for many many kays, but the local mitsu mechanic reckons he's seen a number of them develop whines/grumbles at under 200K k?

I am no expert, but have had one for 11 years since new, NJ, early 96.
285,000k now.

To where? New one to me. :o)
Have heard of excessive and early oil use when the oil filters are not changed as recommended and heavier oil used. Oil change is every 5000k with filter every 10,000k for normal use. Around town usually I change my filter every 5000k due to soot buildup. My opinion is that the oil filter goes to bypass before 10,000k in some cases when full/blocked.
No problems with gearbox. Not touched since new.
These are the same gearboxes as the 3.5l petrol.
A lot bigger and different model the 3.0l V6.
Mitsu lifted the body 20mm off the chassis to get it in.
Still very tight and close to the body tunnel.
The old 2.6l 4cyl gearbox had to have 5th gear done every 200k or so.
The 5th gear bearing was too light, even though Mitsu did a 34 to 42 roller upgrade to the bearing. Used to have a 85 NB.

I know my local courier used to have a canter and complained about the gear box going every 200k or so, you could always hear him comming the box was so god damn noisey... But then again he was continually driving very heavy loads around an industrial area doing about 500k's+ a week of stop start, so that one would think that that kind of use would strain even the best box.

Alice Springs I found that when I was on sealed roads doing the speed limits that it was using a sump of oil per day. If I was on dirt roads it would use no oil at all. After a visit to the local Mitsy dealer in Alice it was decided to disconnect the Snorkle at the air filter, and after that I had no further problems. My thoughts are that the motor at higher speeds could not get enough air and that it was trying to draw air from the sump and was burning the oil on the wat through. I had the car from new and had the snorkle fitted in the first year of its life and it was about 3 years old when I did this trip,up until then had never used any oil. Sold the car when I got
home to buy NL 2.8 td. and today have NP 3.2 DID and neither have ever used oil.

yep, that's something similar to what I've heard. As always I guess, there are probably very few cases of this problem, but once the rumour mill starts, it makes it sound like a common problem when reported in several different sources. I too am thinking about a NL 2.8TD, so was just wondering if there is any difference in the NJ and NL TD motors. Mitsubishi themselves are surprisingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly) useless when it comes to obtaining info like this. Last week a Mitsu car dealer had no idea what the year ranges were for NJ/NK/NL and thought that NMs had a 3.8V6 etc. Private enthusiasts are usually a better source of info than the product originators!
I'm also thinking about a NP 3.2 and would be curious about your impressions about the two motors - no doubt the 3.2 is considerably more powerful and better on fuel, but what about servicing, reliability etc? My other concern with the NP is that, despite being IRS front and rear, I actually found it to be sloppier in the handling department than NJ-NL, although I guess its extra weight doesn't help...

The problem above was reported in (The dog and lemon guide) but I have never heard it happening to any body I know, or for that matter on the explore oz
forum.

yep, did a search and found nothing...will try again to
sign up with pajero club.
The dog and lemon guide is a great read, but if you took it too literally, the only cars you'd drive would be Toyotas or Mazdas. It definitely reports on 'worse case scenarios' and I suspect lack of maintenance is a common culprit with some of the problems...
