Hoping for some advice, as there is a week's wait to get the only local sparks to look at it.

The F250 has KAB air suspension seats, air supply is provided by a small compressor mounted under the bonnet which pumps to a reservoir.

Wiring goes direct from battery terminal to a relay looking thingy marked "Diac Safe" "ProQuip P1512X 12vDC 20/20a" from there a wire with a 20A inline spade type fuse goes to the compressor.

All worked well for 9 months then it stopped. First thing to check is the inline fuse, replace the blown one with a new one. Compressor runs for 2 seconds, blows the new fuse, try another fuse, same thing.

Checked all the wiring no obvious shorts, what's going on? What should I check next?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Chris

What sort of compressor and what sort of current draw? My Blue Tongue compressor pulls at least 25 amps. 20 amp fuse would blow!

It's a Hadley model 850. Not sure of the draw. It's a US made thing that comes as part of the air kit for the seats.

Obviously the motor is overloading or shorting....Can you disconnect the plumbing & run the compressor light? can you check the resistance of the motor windings, there should be some, not much but some. I'd be looking for a short, or semi short in the system, maybe one of the windings on the armateur or something like that.
Only other thing I can suggest is a Gremlinometer & mine was stolen.

My ARB one did the exact same thing and I ended upgrading the wiring and the problem went away

Hi GoneTroppo,

From a site I found via Google

Cut n paste

Product Overview:
Hadley 850-Series Direct Drive Compressor
Product Details:
Hadley 12-Volt Direct Drive 1/6th Horsepower Mini Air Compressor Kit. This H.D. Hadley light weight constructed compressor weighs less than 3.1 lbs. and _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx less than 15 amps on initial startup and 9 amps when running. With this compact compressor design, Hadley states that it can be mounted in any ventilated position. The typical operation is 110-135 PSI. It is an Intermittent Duty Compressor with a maximum run cycle of (7) min. and requires a (30) min. cool down. Since Hadley's internal parts are self lubricating (Oil Free) it means no maintenance required. The Compressor Measures 5.7''L x 2.12''W x 4.5''H

From this I would suggest that there is a fault of some type probably in the compressor itself. If so, the only thing I can suggest is to replace it.

Hope that helps.

Ross

hi troppo, can you disconnect the airlines and see if it works without a load on it?

the other thing could be that the piston or something has seized, and stops it turning,

Thanks everyone, I'll pull the airline off in the morning and see what happens when it's not under load.

I've pulled the airline off. Runs and sounds normal.
As soon as you put your finger on the outlet hole (in the nicest possible way) to create load...fuse blows.

What does this mean? A new pump?

Doesn't sound good - as soon as it loads up it sounds like something is shorting inside. From the looks of the pump, it should be fully servicable, may have a shorted brush or armature, other possibly is dodgy bearings causing the motor to twist under load and stall?
