Just wanted to Thank everyone who posted in response to our question about Domes vs canvas tents.
We had been thinking all along that the centre pole canvas tent was the way to go, but it was great to hear different opinions and gave us some food for thought.
So thanks again!! Decision made!
Southern Cross tent will be coming with us on the trip!!!
Catch you later

Good move mate...See if they have any 'demo' tents. I got a demo from them, had been erected once at a Trade Show- and saved quite a few $$$$$.
Centre Pole 9x9.

Thanks, sounds like you made a good saving, have to remember that if we need new tent!
We already have two tents and have used them a bit....so we know they're reliable!

I never saw the initial Thread, just this one. But have some first hand experience of pole or dome tents. Last year while camping down near Wooden Bong a big storm went through. We were in a Chinese centre pole copy of a
Southern Cross tent which rocked and rolled all night (wind related). The top of the tent (1m square) turns into the wind and wobbles around a lot but that's it. Next morning we went for walk around the
camp and there were trees down and lots of tents damaged. Some were just shredded to pieces. All of the broken ones were domes so you made the right choice for sure.

Yes I can relate to that, we too had a Chinese copy of a
Southern Cross centre pole.
I say Chinese but I think it was COI Leisure made in NZ.
We had a very windy night at Wilsons Prom and next morning the
campsite was strewn with ripped dome tents.
cheers

So your chinese versions didn't leak in the rain?? We have considered these tents but are not too sure how much trust too put in them, some of the seams seem (lol) to be a bit dodgy!! They do weigh less than the aussie made versions I think?! Let me know if this is right or not!

I say Chinese version tongue in cheek as you could just notice the difference in quality compared to the
Southern Cross brand.
Ours leaked once because I hadn't wet the seams enough, but after that it was fine. It was a COI Leasure brand cost $1000. From memory it was an extended Lightining Ridge model. Only sold it because we brought a rooftop tent

Hi
No leaks except what blows in the front zip in very heavy wind / rain. I am very happy with it but not the bag it came in! I had it on the roof rack and it spread it's DNA all the way from Alice to
Birdsville. When I arrived at the pub the bag was just a shredded mess. I have no complaints about the tent at all. Good enough I reckon. And only cost about $350 but dearer now. Site Link

Just make sure you soak it
well for several months before you use it..
ours leaks like flyscreen - was soaked before using.. SC told us it had not been wet enough..
was then left out in the rain for month (last yr), and soaked to bits, and still leaked, they took it back for "testing".. they handed it back saying its now fixed, but we shall see.
i think theres better value to be had out there, but yes single pole is the wya to go

Way to go. I have a 10 by 10 foot centre pole and couldn't be happier with it.

Southern Cross or Freedom... single pole and high quality. Unlike Trucksters, our SC only had a heavy shower of rain and not a drop of water inside since. Just got to be the best there is, and 1 person and about 10 minutes and your all setup. Packing back in the bag is a different matter.
Both owners of the 2 businesses are very easy to talk to.
You will be happy with either, I know we are.
regards
mike

Centre pole's are OK but we have just gone to an Oztent RV3 and we think it's a real step up. So easy. Anyone want a COI 10x10 centre pole tent?

Yeh...quite like the oz tent but don't they pack up long, 2 metres I think. Not sure where the best place is to pack that!!! Maybe along the edge of the roof rack??!!

That's where ours sits and it's a lot easier to toss on the roof rack than the centre pole one. Good to know they do warranty work too. Impressed so far with manufacture - haven't heard many grizzles about warranty claims.

That looks like the set up our daughter has Tour boy. The tent was originally a centre pole Oztent, but went into B.C.F a couple of months ago and saw a square framed support for the same tent, bought it immediately, she liked it better than centre pole. She uses a blow up mattress and the centre pole made it difficult for her to get in/out of bed (she has issues with balance.)

Picked up the Primus (COI Leisure) centre pole extended model with the blue canvas. Great tent. $399 on special at show but we paid $349 due to mix up at register (bonus!).
Had problem after only a few outings with stripping the tread on the captive nut on the main centre pole.
This tent actually comes standard with the 2 pole side-pole kit that makes it a clear floor area. So you can choose what you want to use.
