I saw on qld news tonight that the govt. is planning to increase stamp duty on new/used vehicles to help decrease green house gasses. The lowest fee will be for 4 cylinders & the highest for 8 cylinder vehicles. The transport minister said that qld will still have the lowest SD in Aust.

Can someone please enlighten me on how an increase in stamp duty is going to affect greenhouse gasses?
Maybe people aren't going to buy as many vehicles? Codswallop! IMHO it will not affect car sales at all, but it WILL affect the amount of coin raked in by the Govt.

Just an excuse to prise even more from the seemingly endless source of money called the Australian Taxpayer.

Hi Stu.
The govt reasoning is that 4 cylinder cars will be more popular!!!!!!!!!!!

It certainly is a case of increasing indirect taxation.

G'day Vince,
If they were fair dinkum about this sort of thing, the Govt would reduce or exempt hybrid and electric vehicles from stamp duty altogether. But it sounds like they are all lumped in together.

Nope, you will have to pay luxury tax on the 70 series depending on options.

Still, one may win lotto one day. (if I can ever remember to buy a ticket)

Stu, if they were serious about public health, they'd offer serious quit smoking and other drugs of addiction therapy and rehab free. But the fact is they only care about themselves and looking after their jobs. And to do that they need money...ours :(((

stu050 - about the hybrid cars, i read in one of the latest 4x4 mags that out of 100 vehicles, the toyota prius came 75th for being environmentaly friendly. the test not only tests the cars emissions, but TOTAL emissions which include emissions to manufacture all the way through to running emissions. the hybrid cars are more environmentally UN-friendly to produce & the batteries dont last long and are hard to dispose of! the best of the tested vehicles was actually a jeep wrangler for TOTAL emissions! go figure. (p.s. not a jeep owner, lover or even admirer!).

Doug, hardly squabbling or running them down. I don't like the look of the 70 series at all. That's a personal thing. I dont use mine for work, and often carry passengers etc. However the new V8 should be a brilliant motor.
As for affordability, why can't we say that they are too expensive ?
Nissan certainly have done so with their pricing.
How many people here chose Nissan over Toyota because they couldnt afford or justify a Toyota. Quite a few, especially when air con is extra on the Toyota for starters.
If I really thought that I wanted and needed one I'd find a way of buying one.
But to me, the 70 series are aimed at a market I'm not in.
When I buy my next mine it could be different :)))

Vince,

It's just another one of Peter Beattie's loads of crap he is dishing up on a near daily basis at present. If it's not him then it's his deputy Anna Bligh.

The reduction of greenhouse gasses bit is just to try and make people swallow the decision. In fact he is using the increase to provide extra funding to mental health treatment, plus bolster his government's funds.

They are just running the state to a great mess at present. Some of his greatest hits are water, health and electricity to name but a few. Whenever he gets squeezed he does a backflip on a whole range of delicate issues. They don't call him backflip Beattie for nothing.

They have 1000 to 1500 people a week moving into South East QLD and they didn't have the foresight or the balls to get some infrastructure in place and now they are putting it all on local residents telling them that they have to conserve more etc while the infrastructure gets built. Meanwhile cost for everything are just going up and up. What a load of crap.

Sorry for the rant Vince but gee I feel better.

Next they will scrap the 8 cent fuel subsity too.

How's BETTIE's form wanting the councils to fund the water infrastructure and then he wants to take it over for next to nothing

Hi 100series.
I think on some weekends the fuel subsidy is being lost in the system.
Two weeks ago in Grafton, fuel was the same price as on the Gold Coast. Figure that one out!.

Increasing the S/duty makes as much sense as his (Beatie's) plans re bringing water from the Sunshine Coast at a cost of about $1billion when there is an existing pipeline between the Gold Coast Dam and Brisbane already but it is not to be touched.
Have a look at which party holds the seats in the areas he is flogging.
Maroochy Shire has a good water supply but a debt of $165 million which we - the rate payers - will continue to repay through our rates even after Beattie and Bligh take the infrastructure which was built with the debt.
Also you must feel for Toowoomba which is almost out of water but is not getting one dollar to fix their problem. Why is Toowoomba not part of the Queensland South East after all it is less than an hour west of Ipswich?
Oh well! What's for lunch? At least I have some input there.

Increase is from 1/1/2008, after the federal election.

According to the Brisbane Courier mail the "environmentally friendly" tax will see Queensland's 2% motor vehicle transfer fee increase to new rates linked to a car's number of cylinders.
Vehicle Price Old Duty New rate New duty Increase
Toyota corolla $22000 $440 3% $660 $220
Ford Falcon $38000 $760 3.5% $1330 $570
Holden statesman $69000 $1380 4% $2760 $1380

Re the takeover of council water assets, pretty tricky getting the Councils to wear the debt and the asset goes to the state.

Government coffers should be full from GST, up here in Queensland but we are paying for past neglect with health , water and social services .

Makes me wonder what new taxes (or reduced services ) will be introduced to fund environment issues on the federal stage.
Will be interesting to hear the cost and how it will be met.

From what I have heard is that Peter Beattie wants to amalgamate local councils as well.
In SW QLD (Cunnamulla to Birdsville) the proposed amalgamation will include 7 existing shire to make on big shire. This shire will have a land area greater than Victoria.

Tell me how this will work.

Cheers Kev

PS I am considering working for one of the existing councils ATM (not to sure now)

Easy, same as when the Gold Coast Council amalgamated . First you get a bunch of high priced council offocials and pay them more than 100grand a year to make rules the same for penthouses as rural dwellings. Then you find the biggest b%^&*rd of all and pay him/her more than the PM to try and keep the other pigs in the feedlot in line.

Guys you ain't experienced taxes until you come to NSW but hey they're a fact of life so not worth whinging about. The one you want to stand by for is the real green house (aka carbon tax) that will certainly come down the pipeline in the not too distant future. I'm betting it will be imposed by the Federal Govt and will be linked to the number of Km you travel each year.....they will have this you beaut formula that will calculate your carbon footprint and then bill you for it.
But again....not worth worrying about only give you ulcers.

Cheers

It is very shortsighted to put a higher tax on sex cylinder cars which are popular with families.

I bet the Transport Minister gets driven around in a V8 petrol monster.

Maybe the Qld government could save some $$ and ltake the lead environmentally by ruling that all leased and owned govt cars, including those for executives and pollies, are limited to 4 cylinders (or below 2000 cc).

The old "bash the motorist in the hip pocket" trick.

This is the same government that makes you pay for the ambulance service through your electricity bill. And if you have a business premises too you pay twice - but you don't get two ambulances!
