Hello All, I need some input from you on tow vehicle for a 16 foot pop top. We currently tow it with a V6 3 Litre Camry Altise. It does the job Ok, but worries me a bit because we are sort of up at the top end of its towing ability. ( We didn't think ahead, bought the car, and later our first van.)
I am interested in buying a current model Mazda BT 50, freestyle cab, 4x2 which has a 3 Litre intercooled Turbo & the common rail injection fuel system. Such a vehicle would be better for towing & I could use it also for my work. That way my wife would still be happy as she could still have "her" car & I would no longer be forced to drive it when we go away, van or no van!!

Its not uncommon to read posts on this forum concerning damage to diesel fuel pumps & injection systems due mainly it seems to fuel contamination. Not having owned a diesel before, it "frightens" me a bit. ( the cost of repair etc) It even got a bit worse a few days ago reading posts on the common rail injection system and the increased potential for problems caused by contamination in the common rail system.

We are not gung ho on buying new, so your comments would be appreciated on whether we would we be better off to buy a late model intercooled turbo diesel which does not have the common rail system. Or would we be better of to stick with petrol, maybe a Falcon ute.

Your concerns regarding the high cost of repairs and some parts for diesel motors might be well founded. Have a look at Thread #46223 and hang onto your credit card and cheque book.

A 3 ltr TD with auto would be a great tow vehicle. Dual cab with a bit of carrying capacity in the tray and some room inside and you'll never look back. Whilst I prefer Toyotas I suggest you also have a look at the Rodeo and forget all the crap about failures....its only at the margin and the extreme end of reality. With the proper servicing and appropraie use it should last you forever. Cheers and happy travels

Mate, just use good quality fuel and change fuel filters regally and you will be rite, anything to do with a diesel fuel system is expensive, they are simple yet complex and have very fine tolerances.

You re hard pressed to find a diesel engine theses days that don’t use common rail/ electronic delivery Ect.
