Hi all just thought I would post and tell those who would like to know I have come up with a camp shower system that wastes little water with the coleman hot water system.
The problem has alwys been getting under the shower soaping up and washing of without wasting water. The problem was if you wanted to stop the water you really needed to reach out and turn of the unit soap up then start the whole thing up again.
Solution.....I have a flow splitter. The inlet line from the heater unit goes into a standard five dollar water diverter turn the knob the flow stops and is diverted back to the bucket via a second line soap up when you are ready to wash of turn the knob and the water is diverted instantly back to the shower. The water will circulate around and around until you bring the shower knob back on. The good thing is the water will reach temperature the heater will shut of during the water circulating so you dont even waste gas its almost fool proof ....the whole set up about $20.

Yeah Mate, you're a mile in front of me, there.

This is me having a camp shower in the South Australian outback. Read the whole story at Camp Shower

Heading back there in a few months. Hope to camp one night at an old stockmen's hut about five km from this spot. The well that supplies the pictured cattle trough is handy to the hut so I'll be able to be sweet and clean again.

Regards,
Laurie.

Hi Sarge,

That's a brilliant idea.

I recently bought the new model Primus HWS after the salesman guaranteed me that you could simply turn the water off via the knob on the shower head and the pilot would stay alight. When i got home and tried it, the low water flow switch turned off the burner including the pilot light. At least they (Ranger Camping) took it back no problems after apologising for their mistake. But your idea is a brilliantly simple solution for the problem.

For those looking at the new Primus, note that the pump head is larger now and does not fit inside the neck of a 20L water container - bummer.

Cheers

Hi Sarge.
It certainly is a great idea.
I have used a similiar system on my heat exchanger/show system. Certainly required when the kids want a shower!!.

1 x 10 litre bucket half filled with water heated on the gas stove
1 x submersible pump and adjustable shower head
1 x pop-up shower tent

Place shower head in bucket while not in use.

KISS

Cheers,

Russ.

Hi Russ,

Sounds very similair to the setup I have. But with 2 kids as well who need a shower not as hot as the wifes, it meant I was constantly adding hot/cold water to get the temp right. Anyway, i tried the Primus setup and it gave a good flow of adjustable water but without the ability to stop the water mid-shower.

But by the time I had unpacked the heater, attached the gas bottle, connected all the hoses and set it up, I found it was just as quick to boil 4L of water and add it to a 20L jerry - Just so gotta agree about the KISS principle and so have shelved plans to buy another water heater.

Cheers

Captain

I found the best system for a Wife and Kids was the vehicle heat exchanger.

I set mine up just like a regular shower (see piccy above).

Makes having a shower so easy.

Sarge

Like your idea, as I had been thinking of getting rid of the coleman and going back to my 20 year old canvas bucket that I haul up a tree.

I don't want to sound really dense, but what is a water diverter?
Other than that I "think" I can replicate you system.
