We are looking at buying a camp oven and would like some feedback on them. Do they do the job efficiently and are they worth the money ? Bottom line...would you recommend us buying one. Thanks....Janet

Do you mean a camp oven, as in the cast iron or bedourie style that cook in hot coals, or do you mean a camping oven that sits on the gas stove?

Thanks Shaker for your reply. Yes I meant the sort that fits on the gas stove. Sorry for the mixup.

Once you get the hang of using them, the Coleman oven works very well.

Hi Shaker,
This has tweaked my interest. Where are they able to be purchased from. We are in Victoria and the better half also wants to know can they successfully cook roast vegies etc. Looks ideal. Any further info would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Col

Sorry Col, we've never done roast vegies in it. Used it to heat things & make a cake or two is all.

Hi Colin, They cost $89.90. But we have found an American site were we can but 1 shipped, landed and converted to the Aussie dollar for about $50.00. Large camping stores that stock Coleman brand should have them if you don't want to import from thr U.S. Janet

Thanks guy's for the info, it is something we will be definately looking into, as we also had toyed with the Cobb cooker but couldn't see the value in it for us as usually just the two of us. It will give me another excuse to go bush again when we get it, so we can try it out. Thanks again,
Regards from Col

Nice, but seven or eight times the price of the Coleman.

Janet,

I use a conventional cast iron camp oven, and often instead of in a pit fire, I use it on top of my coleman stove and it cooks roasts, dampers etc fine.

Just buy one of them and your set.

chineese 9 quart ones are about $30 at almost any camp store.

Thanks Ron, That is another good idea to look into. Can you cook everything in it as you would if it were in coals ? i.e bread cake damper ect.

Well we have cooked roasts in it etc, and I actually have a 'camp oven mate', which is another contraption which runs on gas, and puts heat all around oven, but to be honest, throw it on top of stove, and its just as good.

lets face it, its a cast iron item, and it gets very hot and cooks whats in it, at whatever temp you desire, which is to a point not controllable by fire.

Never had a roast not done, and thats on top of a coleman powerhouse, inc damper.

try it,

cheap option,

Rgds

Many Thanks Ron, Hubby and I think that will be the option we will go with.

Think of us between July 28 and August 15 as we travel the Birdsville track from Adelaide , Cordillo Downs Road to Innaminka and out to Cameron Corner then down the Strezlecki Track to Arkaroola then home via Rawnsley Park.

I'll check in with you when we get home and let you know how the cooking went.

Thanks again Janet

I'm jealous,

have a good trip. Sure you will go ok with oven, i looked at the coleman one, then thought on trying my cast one on top and it worked a treat so just go with that now.

Only difference with not being in a fire is the lid isnt being directly heated, but you could always put some coals on it if you wanted but I've never found it necessary as it gets fairly hot all over.

I usually put a leg of lamb in it, and let it simmer on the powerfouse on really low for about hour then chuck veggies in for half an hour, works well.

I actually have to use a trivet (avail at most camp shops too) to keep it off the floor of oven, makin me hungry, might need to do one this weekend.

(thats another advantage, can use at home without a fire)

have a good one

MMmm the roast lamb sounds good. We are probably going to buy 1 over the w/end so i think a roast lamb will be a good trial run in it.

Thanks again for the excellent ideas...Janet

You do know all about seasoning it dont you?

if not do a search on here.

one tip, its best to do it in a barbie with a hood, doesnt mess up your inside kitchen oven then.
