Motherhen
I won a weekend at a hotel in Kalgoorlie, and am looking at taking a week or two of leave from my job in September to incorporate some sightseeing in the region. We will
camp in the F250 when touring.
Holland Track - Is this suitable for the F250 - or is it too narrow in
places? I don't want to get 'adventure marks' on it yet. If suitable, how many days to allow, best
places and deviations to see, best spots to overnight? Looking at this as a different route to the main roads to get to Kal.
Then we would take a few days on the golden quest discovery trail.
Any 'must not miss'
places? Any other day-or-two trips in the vicinity? I haven't been to Kal since we travelled through on our honeymoon 38 years ago.
All 'local knowledge' and suggestions appreciated.

Hi Motherhen,
The F250 will be fine on the
Holland Track, but NOT if you are towing your Bushmaster. It was this track that I did all my damage on my Windsor Rapid, the constant snaking around trees (ripped off indicators, antenaes, roof clips, awning etc...). You may get the odd small branch, but nothing that wouldn't easily come off a
well polished vehicle.
Just watch it hasn't been raining before you go, that turns an easy track into a long distance mud marathon!
Cheers
Captain

Hi Captain
Thanks for your reply.
I had read (maybe your report) of the narrow and winding section, so was concerned about the extra length and width of the F250. We won't be taking the Bushtracker this time, so looking to do something different.
Last year we came
home with the caravan via the
Norseman Lake King Road after heavy rain - that was fun, but nothing the Patrol and caravan couldn't handle. Just slushy mud and lots of muddy pot holes. Nothing you could get bogged in.

Hi Motherhen,
A very good region to visit,
Coolgardie museum, the Mining Hall of Fame in Kalgoorlie, and a counter lunch at the very famous
Ora Banda pub (approx 50 ks from Kal), is also a must see, all good history.
From memory the actual Golden Quest Trail is about 900ks long.
You will enjoy it.
Cheers, the Nugget..

Thanks the Nugget
We visited the
Coolgardie museum 38 years ago! Might be interesting to go through again.
The prize pack included a booklet on the Golden Quest trail with background history.

also when doing the Golden Qust Discovery trail. Instead of heading for the highway at
Siberia. Carry on towards Daveyhurst and
check out the amazing breakaways at the Nthn end of lake Wangine. Then from Daveyhurst pick the trail back up again

Thanks Davoe - I was hoping for your input. It all looks interesting and am hoping to get enough time away from the
farm to enjoy it.

We were in Kalg last August and I would add the following suggestions. Go to the
visitors centre on arrival and find out if there is any blasting going on in the superpit. This was spectacular.
For something different, do one of the brothel tours in town. It was surprisingly interesting and informative.
If you want to go for a day trip out of down, head up to
Lake Bollard. There is some interesting artwork up there. It looks like the
lake has been invaded by alien beings.
Have fun

Thanks Michael
Blasting at the super pit looks like something to add. I think i saw a review of the brothel tour on one of the travel shows. Lake Bollard is on the Golden Quest trail, although i prefer history to modern art.

Motherhen, at about 1645 each night they blast at the SuperPitdrive thru town and turn right and its along there somewhere that the viewing platform is. In my opinion this is an amazing sight, the whole ground moves. Went back three times to see it.
Also take a look at the RFDS station (it may have been an open day when we were there but
well worth a look, they do such a great job, also there is a Bureau of Meteorology station at Kalgoorlie too, and the visit there was TOP NOTCH.
Hay St is also fun, for a drive thru, but I wouldnt stop

the Mining Hall of Fame on the
Menzies road is an obvious one too Motherhen as it's won a few tourism awards etc.
Front Bar of The Exchange goes alright when the girls are on too but not a place for the faint hearted or wives.

The Golden Quest Trail is a good thing. Have a look at Rowles Lagoon, Ularring Soak (aka Ularring Rocks),
Kookynie (there's a pub there), Niagara Dam, are all great
places to stop and chill out. Historically interesting too.
Have a look in the EO bookshop, or Dymocks, for Travellers' Guide to the Parks and
Reserves of WA, it's good value. Also Western 4WDivers trips out of the Goldfields.
As far as the
Holland Track goes if a fire has been thru and you have to leave the track look out for sharp sticks everywhere. Puncture City.

Thanks Gone Bush; will note your suggestions
We might have to work out how to carry more spares. The F250 only has one, and we are used to travelling with 4 (2 on Patrol and 2 on caravan).
