I have a SIGG thermos that is about 750mm. I
cook the dogs and then pre heat the thermos, drain pre heat water, add the still hot dirty dogs to the thermos and then add fresh boiling water.
I can fit in enough dogs for 3 kids under 12 - skinny long dogs not short fatties.
Pack the dogs in the morning and they are still v. hot at lunch time.
The archive post by Robin was a good read.
I also have had varing degress of success with thermos's. I now have a few rules on storing them.
Store them vertically - the body is insulated but the cap aint. If the hot water is in contact with the cap you will loose heat quickly.
Give them a sleeping bag. Add to the insulation by wrapping them in somthing. Store them between cloths bags or wrap with a towel.
I have found the above helps greatly - esp. with the cheaper thermos's.
PS - I got the SIGG OS, I expect you should be able to get them in Oz.
Paul.

Pete,
I think they are called a Volcano. Get nice stainless steel ones at The Australian Geographic
Shop. Many
camp stores (Like Snowys in
Adelaide) have other versions of the same thing. Few sticks and a bit of paper underneath and water is boiling 10-15minutes later.
Some friends have one, and use it occasionally, but I still prefer a thermos.

They have them at Rays camping supplies.
Known originally in NZ as a Bengazi (sp?) boiler as the troops are suposed to have invented them in Egypt during the war. Also known as a "Thermet" (brand name)

Phil,
I found that post as
well but it didn't have any details of the manufacturer.
