Greetings All. There seems to be a distinct lack of good off road and 4wd touring/
camping spots within the
Townsville region. With what time I do have at home, the only
places to go for a
camp reasonably close are a couple of national sparks and wild fire service run camps, which restrict the C/T or you have to travel hundreds of
miles. The state forests are locked up, the abundance of bush is privately owned, even common law
water systems display threatening signs. Queensland - good one day, locked up the next! Anyone up this way got a few
places up your sleeve?

And WA is speeding towards that very same problem at fast rate of knots...
Its very sad, but in the end it will do more harm than good. People will just go whereever the hell they like and anything that genuinally needs to be protected won't stand a chance.

Long time since I lived in T'ville but late '70s/early '80s we did lots of
camping on the Burdekin. From up around the Basalt Wall on the Lynd road, to near the bridge on the Flinders Hwy, to Burdekin Falls/Dam, to the weirs on the lower Burdekin up from Clair.
Remember a great
camping trip with my Dad. Up the
Cardwell Range to Blenco Falls, over the range past Valley of Lagoons & Cashmere stations and to the headwaters of the Burdekin (you could step over the mighty Burdekin up there). Then back through Mt Fox, Wallerman Falls, Hidden Valley and Paluma (Mt. Spec.)
Was some good
camping on the Harvey's Range Development Road on the gravel section heading for
Greenvale too, but perhaps that's all sealed road and fenced now?
Would be a real shame if all those areas are 'locked away' now but with the pressure of more
population and idiots who trash such
places, it wouldn't surprise me. Hope you find some good spots.

There are numerous free campsites along the Burdekin River, especially around Charters Towers. 30km or so north of CT (Fletcher
Creek and
Big Bend), or 10-15km south (
Flat Rock Recreation Area on the broughton road), together with the river crossings on the Hervey Range Development Road (Keelbottom
Creek and the Burdekin River one) and finally the Macrossan Bridge
camping area.
Try areas south, like
Wunjunga (
funny dunny park), campsites at
Clare (burdekin river) etc.
Heaps to do when you look ;-) All less than 1.5 hours....
Andrew
