Spin on filters have been the greatest thing since sliced bread, but if they only could be made more excessible on some of these motors!!. Ever had a oil filter flip over in your hand just as you wind it off the last thread!!?, and all that black chit runs up the inside of ya overall arm!! .I often wonder why the filter has to mounted directly on the engine block, as to being mounted in a separate housing somewhere making it easier to service. Its ok if you have the luxury of a hoist, but its not the case with clumsy ol me.

Check out www.amsoil.com and see the type of set-up I use.
I have my oil filters (one standard and one by-pass type), mounted on the inside of the chassis, just down the back in front of the rear wheel. I've made up a protective plate to ensure they don't get holed by a stone etc.
Unless I have a catastrophe (of my own making), I can get anything up to 80,000klm out of an oil change too (using their 100% synthetic oil of course). Best I've done to date is 33,000klm on the old 4.2TD that I sold recently. Oil was still quite okay as per analysis I get done regularly.

That is a very efficient system as far as filtration goes!, So how often do you have a analysis done?

As Willie has so subtly alluded, I haven't had the current belly-full of oil in the Chev long enough to have it analysed yet.
However, when I had the 4.2TD , I was getting it done about every 7,500klm or so.
Once you get comfortable with how long you can let it go, it isn't so important to do it as frequently I guess.
You still need to change the filters about every 15,000klm. Makes a change from the factory idea whereby you change your oil every 5000klm but only worry about the filters every 2nd change.

How much does it cost to get the oil analyzed? I've always thought that it is cheaper to just change the oil in a car rather than get it analyzed.
On all of our larger equipment at work we get the oil analyzed, but that is because some of these machines take hundreds of liters of oil. It also gives you some idea of what is wearing out in the machine by telling you what metals were found in the oil.

test. I don't believe it's necessary to get the tests done as frequently, once you've established the benchmark figure. I will only get the analysis done every 20,000klm or so, once I've done that many klicks (without dropping my load on the highway somewhere)......hahaha

Hi Axle, mate try the filter on a V6 prado 95 series what a pain in the ars#. Need an extra foot on your arm an about 2 inchs in diameter to get your arm in. First filter change I took off all the bash plates under radiator,oil pan, auto box etc thinking I could get to it WRONG !! Rang my mate up as i had already droped the oil out so wanted to put fresh oil in with new filter not old filter. Pull the rubber flap off on the passengers side front inner guard just behind and infront of the wheel. OK no problems, ah yeah and how do I get my arm to reach across a metre to get the oil removing tool on, ah yeah need to buy the correct tool from toyota that goes directly over filter then 1/2 inch extension bar to a attach to my 3/4 socket. So $100 bucks later I now have the correct
tools to do the job. Old hilux was just soooo easy to change but at least I only have to do the prado every 10k instead of every 4k. My mate has the 120 petrol what a beauty right at the top and even has a drain around it. Regards Steve M

Hi stephen, Told ya to buy a landrover,:))))))) no problem getting the filters off them!
Just pour oil in the top and wait till it runs out the bottom.
Know what you mean about special tools, rover are good at that caper!.

OR on that note to buy a nissan :))))) easy to work on too,But they do take a special tool to drive 1 :)))LOL LOL ha ha ya got to love that LOL
