Just wondering if people can tell me what the find good and bad in swags. Are domed ones better or flat, what sizes are good, are double ones ok, do you need fly mesh etc, also what size do they roll up to, how waterproof are they, any advice!

Comfort and a good nights sleep is pretty important when on the road covering large distances. For me the first consideration is the mattress or foam insert, make sure it is soft and think enough, i'd say 50mm absolute miniumum but lie down on it and try it out.
After that a decent width, not sure what
mine is but it is a decent sized single. Depending on where you're using it an inbuilt fly mesh can be essential and make sure its a fine mesh that will keep out the midgies! The dome end at the head is great or just the normal tent style ends that you tie to a tree etc will suffice.
I
water proofed my canvas swag after I brought it with on of those spray cans. In terms of size, this is the only downfall of sways, I havent seen many roll up nice and small.
Mine resides on the roofrack when travelling so not a problem.
Hope that helps in some small way.

Hi Gibbo,
I've got one with a flap over the pillow (pulls up over my head) which is great as it keeps out the insects, the cold and the light (lets me sleep in!!).... While not 100% effective as a fly, it beats having to put one up and I just roll it out on the back of my ute and sleep.
Swags are great... I forget I'm off in the bush sometimes as it's so comfortable.
Cheers, Will.

Hi Gibbo,
I use a hooped swag as I like a bit of space around me. Also easier to move around during a snooze, especially if you're like me, 2 pick handles across the shoulders.
Cheers

I like the idea of just rolling it out and sleeping, but also I hate my face being covered up close! I might have to borrow a few and see how it goes.

Hi
We purchased a
Southern Cross Swag at the
Camping show at Caulfield this
year, used it at
Easter and were very happy with it very comfortable and warm
it was freezing at
Gellibrand, we will be leaving the camper at home and
swagging it when we do the Simpson in 5 weeks time for 3 weeks!!MPG:13!

Good decision to leave the camper at
home but if you can afford it get a
Southern Cross centre pole tent so that you can stand, dress etc. Swags are OK for overnighters but a tent is better for longer trips. Major design flaw with the swag in your
pic - try getting out in heavy rain and keeping your bed dry at the same time!! Centre pole tent is also quicker to erect than your swag as it has 4 pegs and just one pole - no ridge poles to assemble. Enjoy the Simpson!

Isn't it amazing Truck how people just don't see very far ahead! I have friends who bought a caravan $30K and on the first trip decided it didn't have sufficient storage/
